Soon the terrain turned from oak leaves to pine needles, and then to treacherous icy mud, which Storm splashed through, splattering his sister accidentally. "Oops" he called out through his clenched teeth, breathless from the long run. They had been going at that pace for hours, and his muscles were quivering with tension and fatigue.

Shadow was splashed with cold mud by her brother and responded by splashing his back and saying innocently, " Oops!" She then thoughts she saw her mother stop and buried her feet into the mud. Skidding to a stop a foot in front of her mother she slowly walked back up to her and sat down. Looking up at the brown eyes she got caught up in thought about her and her brother's eyes.

Storm wondered about them too. Why were his green, his sister's silver, and their mother's brown. And who was their father?

" Hey, mom? Why are our eyes so different from each others?", Shadow voiced her and her brother's question and then tilted her head to the side.

Their mother seemed not to hear her question. Her head was cocked like Shadow's, and she seemed to be concentrating very hard on something. When Storm repeated the question, she shushed him. Finally, she looked back at them and smiled. "I just caught the first whiff of caribou I've had in years. Great Lupus, it brings back memories of your father." Storm glanced at Shadow, surprised. This was the first time she had ever mentioned their father. "I know you want to know who your father is." She said, sighing. "He was a handsome wolf in the Pack. Silver like you, Storm, with black stripes like you, Shadow. He was soon to become leader, and I his mate, when a tragedy occurred. He was killed by a grizzly, and the pack fell into disorder after his death. I was barely pregnant with you two, but I didn't know. One day, not long after his death, a wise old eagle flew down and announced to the pack that the leaders would be Silver as the Moon and Black as Night, just like your father had been. Everyone thought it was Flash and his mate, Viper. Flash was alright at first, but he and Viper soon became crazy with power, and when I learned I was pregnant with you two, I left the pack in fear that he would kill you."

"Oh,they sound pretty.",Shadow said as she imagined her father's eyes and then nodded and her mother's demand. "I promise we'll stay put until you come back."

With a quick dip of his silvery head, Storm nodded his agreement. "We promise, Momma." He then turned to Shadow, his green eyes locking onto her silver ones. A spark of mischief flashed through them, and he pounced on her, both pups tumbling down the small hill to a small cliff overlooking a wide ravine. Storm heard the clip-clop of hooves on stone, peered over the rim into the ravine, and gasped in awe. Hundreds of caribou ambled below them, slowly walking through the ravine. Their mother's voice cut through the sound of the hoofbeats. "I want you to stay on that cliff while I hunt." Storm nodded silently, still gazing in admiration at the sea of caribou below his paws. Surely we will have meat tonight, he thought, For mother must be able to catch one of them. With a flick of her tail, their mother was off, making her way down the cliff towards the side of the herd.

Shadow growled and gnawed on her brother's ear went they quit tumbling and landed on the cliff. Then she also heard the sound of hooves and peered over the edge. She was amazed by the sight of such large animals and wondered if her mom could even have a chance at catching one. She also nodded at her mother's words and continued to watch the herd silently.

Watching his mother make her way down to the side of the herd, Storm looked over at Shadow. "Come on, let's watch momma hunt!" he yelled, jumping to his feet and making his way over to the very edge of the cliff. Looking over the ocean of brown and grey backs, he tried to find his mother.

Shadow came up beside him and peered over the mass of animals until she located their mother swiftly running along side the herd. " I found momma!", she yipped and then pointed with her snout towards their running mother.

Storm glanced where Shadow was pointing, and sure enough, he soon located there mother, her sleek brown fur dipping and weaving between the mighty caribou bodies.

"Well,yeah,but these look kinda big. Even their puppies are huge! I don't think she can kill any.",Shadow said as she saw two of the 'puppies' run past their mother beside their own mother.

Storm whimpered. Now the doubt was real. He glanced defiantly up at the sky, which was becoming clouded over with gray clouds, foretelling rain. "Of course she'll catch one!" He said again, but a whimper of fear quivered his courageous words.

"Yeah,what am I thinking? Mommy's strong and smart. Of course she can catch one of these huge things.",Shadow said as she sensed her brother's fear and decided to try ending it. She then gently nudged his shoulder with her black snout and gave her friendliest smile.

Storms gave a weak smile, but his sister' swords reassured him. The sky was clouded over now, and beginning to swirl ominously. He looked up just in time to catch the first drop of rain on his nose, and yelped in surprise at the icy water. His yelp startled a few of the caribou, who panicked and started to run. Thankfully, they soon calmed down, but now the whole heard was on edge and ready to run.

Shadow felt water begin to drip down from the sky and onto her fur before seeping down to her skin. It was cold and relieved her of a growing heat due to her dark fur. She licked the drop off of her brother's nose and shushed him warningly as the animals began to run. "Mommy may get hurt. Be quiet."
