Storm nodded, his wide green eyes nervous as he peered over the edge of the cliff to the animals below. Suddenly, the rain, which was pouring now, loosened the earth below and the cliff collapsed, the 2 pups sliding down the cliff on a stream of mud. The caribou, already on edge from Storm's yelp, jumped in surprise and began to stampede. Storm looked in dismay over to his sister. What had he done?

Shadow suppressed a yelp as they slid down toward the beasts below. She saw as they started a frantic stampede and her mother was lost in the large sea of bodies. Looking over to her brother she huddled close to him with her muddy fur and nuzzled his neck soothingly.

Storm felt his sister's warm muzzle pressed comfortingly into his neck, and could only watch as the stampeding herd bellowed and sprinted away into the distance leaving the battered figure of their mother behind in the dust.

Shadow didn't dare look away from her brother's muddy silver fur as the sound of hooves faded and their mother did not return. She knew that what she feared would happen had and was afraid to look at what be a mangled wolf body left behind by the beasts. Slowly she willed herself to look over at where their mother lay and immediately listened to the thing in the back of her mind that said to go up to her.
Once in front of their mother's face she affectionately licked her nose and asked,"Mommy?"

Storm whimpered, for once not trying to hide his sorrow and fear, and followed his sister's footsteps. "I'm sorry momma!" he sobbed, burying his face in her lonk neck fur. "This is all my fault!"

(Should their mom have some last words?)
Shadow pawed at her mother's snout and then nudged it with her own before going to her mother's chest and laying down beside it. Listening for that comforting heart beat she knew so well she caught the sound of something definitely wrong. What she heard was only an extremely slow thump every few seconds that was slowing down rapidly. "Mom,Storm didn't mean to. He didn't mean to break the cliff and scare those things.",the black pup said to her dying mother's chest as she buried the side of her face into it.

(Yeah, i'll put them in) Their mother's voice was weak and shaky, but with her last breath she gasped out 3 words. "Go...to...Pack." And with that she died. Storm stepped back, feeling oddly calm despite the death. Suddenly, the emotions streamed down and he threw back his head and howled, a heart-wrenching, shaky howl full of sobs that changed as he howled, finally sounding as if it came from a much older wolf, deep, mysterious, and mournful. The great heart he had thought would always be beating was still, and the powerful rise and fall of their mother's chest was no longer there. Her battered body was no longer full of life, it was merely a shell of what used to be. Her spirit had gone to Lupus, the great wolf, and there was nothing he could do about it. He hated that feeling of helplessness which overwhelmed him. Being totally, utterly, and completely helpless. His howl rose higher and higher into the grey clouds, the rain pelting his fur like Lupus himself was crying. The sound filled Storm's ears as he gave his soul to the song, howling all his emotions of fear and helplessness up to the sky.

(Alright.)
Shadow heard the last beat of her mother's heart and waited a moment before weakly getting up and going over to her brother's side. She sat beside him and tilted her head up towards the dark grey clouds. At first she couldn't bring herself to howl,but shortly after her brother began she managed to let the song come out to accompany his. It was slightly higher in tune,but had the same mournfully beautiful sound to it. It rose and fell in the air,fighting with the falling rain to be heard until all that could be heard besides her own howl was Storm's. Eyes closed she let the two songs wrap around her and envelope her in a blanket of mystery as her and her brother seemed to gain the howls of much older,wiser wolves as their song continued,accompanying their mother's spirit on its rise into the sky.

Storm heard his sister's howl wrap around him, the two songs twisting and spiraling. Finally he could take no more and fell to the ground in a sobbing heap, his tears mixing with the rain and muddying the ground. He finally rose to his quaking feet and looked at his sister. "I guess we should find the pack," he said quietly, a quiver in his voice the only thing that betrayed his fear.

Shadow eventually heard his brother's song cut off and slowly quieted hers until it also stopped before turning to him. The tears that she cried were hidden by rain as she nodded her head. "We must do what mother wants. But I-",she cut her self of and took a deep breath to gain control over her shaking voice,"I need to... Do something first." She got up and went over to the body of her now dead mother and licked her muzzle as if to kiss her goodbye. "I love you mommy.",she whispered in the body's ear and then nudged its neck before walking back over to her brother. "I'm ready to go."

Storm nodded, and silently led the way up the collapsed cliff. When he reached the top, he turned around and looked back at his mother's broken body lying in the dust. I'm so sorry momma, he thought. I love you. And with those last silent words, he turned back to Shadow. "Maybe we should find shelter soon. Night is coming, and we don't want to be caught outside in the dark."

Shadow followed him up the cliff,having to force herself to tear her eyes from her mother to watch where she was going. She almost slid back down a few times,but eventually reached the top and looked back down at their mother's beaten body lying on the ground below. Having to walk away from the cliff she shook her head to clear it and in response to her brother's words began to look with her eyes for a place to stay.

Storm's green eyes searched for a lace to stay as they went deeper into the undergrowth. Suddenly, his belly grumbled and he remembered that they hadn't eaten in a few days. The rumble startled a rabbit, and Storm bounded off after it, returning to his sister a few seconds later with the limp rabbit in his jaws. "Let's find a place to sleep, and then we can enjoy this," he said, his words muffled around the rabbits thick fur.

Shadow continued to search for a place to stay as her brother hunted the rabbit and by the time he got back she had found the mangled roots of a tree. It was almost like a small den made just for pups their age,crafted by the tree throughout the years that it had sat there. "Would this be a good place?",she asked as she went over to it and looked under its trunk at the hollow beneath.

"That's perfect," Storm said, dropping the rabbit. Using his claws to tear up a large sheet of moss and grass, he dragged it into the den, making a perfect nest in the hollow. He walked back outside and began tearing into the rabbit.

Shadow positioned the moss and grass just right before going over to eat some of the rabbit herself. She torn into the warm meat of the creature alongside her brother. It tasted so good after the days spent not eating anything. "Storm?",she asked between mouthfuls,"Are we going to be good with pack life?"

Storm was silent. He didn't know the answer, so he busied himself with tearing into the rabbit and pretending he hadn't heard, even though they both knew he had.

Shadow didn't mind her brother not answering her so she just shrugged and continued eating. She ate and ate until her stomach was full and a good portion of her half of the rabbit was gone. Stepping away from the rabbit she said to her brother in a tired voice,"I'm going to bed. I love you,brother." With that she walked into the make-shift den they had claimed for the night and curled up on the cushion they had made for it. She let out a big yawn before putting her head down by her chest and listening to her own tiny heart beat. It wasn't as good of a lullaby as her mother's,but she was gone now so there had to be some changes.

Storm ate the last few bite of his half of the rabit before curling up around his sister's smaller, lither frame. He fell asleep with his head on her back, dreaming of the way things used to be and how things would be later on in the future.
