Markus nodded. He did. But he didn't like what he found. The vampire also knew not to spill all the he knew to Paradise since he wasn't sure how she would respond to a coven of vampires wanting to take control of the town.

I smiled at his answer. "What was it?"

The vampire only narrowed his eyes. "Something," came his only response.

"Can't tell me, can ya'?" I asked with that smile again as I leaned across the table. I could get it out of him. I just had to figure out how.

Markus shrugged. "I could. But I won't. You wouldn't like it," he stated.

Well, no duh. I doubt I'll like what Markus really is, once I find out. I shrugged back at him before saying, "I doubt you care about what I don't like, and, for this, I don't either."

Markus was starting to feel a bit agitated now. How was he going to say this without seeming totally crazy? Ugh... Markus opened his mouth to speak, but furrowed his brows together when nothing came out before closing his jaws together with a slight snap. Oh, great Zeus, this was so hard...

I sighed, leaning back in my chair again. It must be pretty bad if he can't tell me... "It can't be that bad, Markus." I said, finally the weight of knowing the Markus wasn't normal coming to my head. That meant that it could be worse then what I could imagine, right? This wasn't just some questionnaire for the fun of it. This was real. "Right?"

"It is that bad," Markus said hesitantly.

My face turned to fear as I said with a shake of my head. "You're exaggerating." I said, my tone showing how I was more hopeful then sure.

"Not something that needs the police, right? Not that bad?" I said, hoping it wasn't bad enough to where he needed the police involved.

Markus growled deep in this throat. "They would be killed before they realized what was going on," he said, speaking the truth.

"Markus... " I said, now completely freaked out at what was happening. This really was serious, and he wasn't going to the police about it?
Once again, I reached out to touch his hand. It seemed to always get him to... Relax. Maybe he'll be more specific about what this 'bad' thing was if I did it. "Just tell me. I won't get involved." I said, my thumb rubbing across his knuckles.

Markus almost pulled his hand out of hers. Though, the soft caress of her thumb across his knuckles made him think twice about it. "I can't risk your life. Humans are too delicate," the vampire murmured.

I frowned. He referred to humans as if... He wasn't one. Though that was a far-fetched suspicion and I chose to shake the thought off. "That means you're delicate too. Meaning, you can't fix it alone." My fingers slipped through his, then squeezed.

Markus snorted a chuckle. "I'm not delicate. And, yes I can." He let his fingers tighten around her's before continuing in a soft tone, "I have been doing things like this for many lifetimes."

"Lifetimes?" I asked, my pulse quickening at what he was saying. "Doing what for life times?" I'll worry about what he meant by 'lifetimes' later, but I had to get as much as I could out of him now.

Ah, sh!t. Markus cringed on the inside. He misspoke and said something he probably shouldn't have. Oh well. Better to answer now than wait until later. "Lifetimes would be how long humans live on average. And I have seen many of those." Markus leaned across the table and gestured to Paradise to lean further so he could whisper in her ear; "Killing the evil things that go bump in the night."
The Greek, then, let go of her hand and slipped away from the table as he slid his hands into his pockets. The bell rang a few seconds after he left the cafeteria.

You'd think that I wouldn't be able to concentrate on what Markus spoke, being to preoccupied by the fact that his breath was hitting my ear and giving me chills, but what he spoke went right through those pleasurable thoughts. He practically told me that he's lived longer then normal 'humans' do. And what he told me afterwards had me on the edge of my seat, dying to know what this dangerous thing was. I watched him walk out of the cafeteria, barely hearing the bell ring. I followed the rest of the students out of the cafeteria and to my next class. All the while thinking about every thing we had said through out that lunch period.
