Now,
Alyce wasn't one to be distracted by people, but the sight of a young man, his
face shaded by the cover of a parka, made her curious. She couldn't really see
his face all that well, but that blonde hair that walked the line between being
wavy and curly caught her eye as something familiar. He went to her school, she
decided, her curiosity partially satiated for the moment.
But then came the
questions about his name... Chance? Chaston? No, no. It started with a 'Ch',
though. That much she remembered. As if she'd been hit with a bat, the answer
came to her, and she smiled. Chase- that was his name. She'd been way off with
Chance and Chaston. Where did she even get the name Chaston from, anyways?
She shook off the
confusing and distracting thoughts for a moment, watching as the other her
disappeared, going out of sight as the subway passed through a dark tunnel. No
light was to be seen outside- only the lights on the subway lit the place. No
more than five inches separated the outside of the subway from the walls of the
tunnel, and it almost made poor Alyce feel claustrophobic.
After a few moments of
uninterrupted silence in the subway, she decided to be daring and ask Chance a
question. Moving to a pole that was in front of him, she leaned on it nonchalantly,
pushing some of her damp hair behind her ear. Her eyes searched for his beneath
his parka, much to no avail. She’d already thought of a good
conversation-starter. One to keep her mind off of the other her that she just
saw.
“So, how long have you
been riding the subway? I haven’t seen you riding it any of the times that I
have…” She held out her hand for him to shake. “I’m Alyce, by the way. We are
in the same algebra class, I believe.” She hoped that she wouldn’t be deemed
stupid for the last few sentences. Almost everyone in the school knew who she
was. She was relatively popular, though she always had enemies of some sort.
And she was sure that he knew she shared the same algebra class as he did.
The subway wouldn’t
arrive at the stop nearest to the school for another few minutes, so the two
had a good amount of time to carry out a conversation. Ooc:// Sorry for the weird format thing of this post. I copied and pasted it off of MS Word...

Chase looked at the outstretched hand of Alyce. He shook it, but he was still wary that this might be the Doppelganger.
I have been taking the subway since the term started. I normally don't go this late, I have work at night, so I am always awake. Yes, we do have the same Algebra class. In fact, I borrowed your pencil yesterday. Here it is.
He held out the pencil to her. He was kicking himself for not telling her yet. He was sure that she was the real Alyce. The other one had been wearing way to much make up and had been wearing way too nice clothing for her to be real. Of course, Alyce didn't look terrible normally, but she certainly didn't wear two thousand dollar dresses.
So, did you see the girl who looked exactly like you, or was it just me?
He was trying so hard to do this casually. It was never nice to drop something like this on people. It also didn't help that he was the exact opposite of social. He called and complained whenever he wasn't put in the back of the classroom. He couldn't stand the thought of being watched. It scared him that someone might find out he was a vampire. He instinctively made sure that his fangs were pulled in. He had to make sure that Alyce didn't find out. She would never trust him.
His chocolate brown eyes locked on hers, and he swiped a piece of his light blonde hair out of his face.
Well, did you?

Alyce's green eyes locked down onto the pencil as it was offered to her by Chase. It was odd that he'd remembered to give it back to her. She vaguely remembered lending it to him herself. It was funny how she could forget such recent things. Maybe she really could blame her forgetfulness on short-term memory loss. No. That would never work. She remembered most things just fine. It seemed as if she would just have to deal with her father nagging about her neglecting to clean her room.
The brown-haired girl shook some hair out of her eyes and took the pencil gratefully, sticking it in a pocket in her binder, which she carried in her hand. It was the only thing she carried, other than her cross-body messenger bag. Her eyes flitted up to Chase's, which were shaded under the hood of his parka. She wanted desperately to brush the hood down, but that would seem rude.
"Thankyou. I was wondering what I had done with one of my pencils," she said, nodding appreciatively to Chase. And then he mentioned the person that looked just like her. And Alyce's blood ran cold. So it hadn't just been her that saw the girl. It made chills run up and down her spine, and goosebumps to rise on her skin.
After a moment of silence, the tanned girl replied softly.
"Yeah. I saw her." She cleared her throat. "I thought it was just my imagination at first. Maybe she's my long-lost twin or something," she said jokingly, letting out a light laugh. She leaned against the pole that kept her steady as the subway moved, and began to look more alert and awake.
The longer she was awake, the more her natural beauty showed. It was a good thing, too, seeing as how she wasn't wearing any makeup. If she hadn't have had at least a smidgen of natural beauty, she would have looked like a pile of crap by the end of the day. But, luckily, Alyce had inherited her mother's figure, her father's eyes, and her grandmother's facial features.

Chase pulled his hood off. There was no need for it in here. He ran his hand through his light blonde hair, and bl[injection]inked his chocolate brown eyes as he adjusted to the light. he much preferred nighttime. It was so much more convenient.
He looked at her, and noticed how the tone of her voice was shaking a little. So she had seen her doppelganger. That wasn't good. She would become an instant target, and the doppelganger would try to get her before she could figure it out. Chase was her only chance now, but he couldn't just drop it on her now. The doppelganger would need time to get stronger. He had some time.
Long lost twin huh? I always wondered if I had a brother or sister like that. My mom, well she wasn't really married to anyone. She could have had twelve kids before me, and I never would have known.
He didn't know why he was telling her this. Maybe she would think he was honest, and when he told her that the girl was her doppelganger she would believe him.
He noticed how she seemed to be getting a little prettier by the minute. he was quite surprised. It was normally the exact opposite. Girls hair fell out, their makeup ran, and their clothes wrinkled. Alyce needed none of that, she just got prettier as the day went on. It was quite interesting to him. He never thought something like that could happen, unless they were otherworldly.
Did you study for the test we have today? I was up all night studying for it after I went to work. I think I might have forgotten everything.
He ran his hand though his hair again, as if trying to brush the thoughts into his head. He couldn't take another failing grade in that class, he might get kicked out of honors. He needed to look as normal as possible. He ran his tongue along his teeth just to make sure that his fangs were pulled in. She couldn't see the fact that he was a vampire, she might never believe him.

Alyce was glad that the topic actually went in a direction away from herself, and that weird double of herself that she saw. The other version of her had looked like a woman- older, prettier, more refined. Not like Alyce. So, therefore, it couldn't be her. It was that simple. And without another thought about that very subject, she dropped it.
She rubbed her eyes as Chase spoke. She was used to people spilling parts of their lives to her, and it was no different with Chase. That was, until the full weight of the information laid down on top of her. Chase had just told her something that was private. He had told her that he didn't know much about his mom, and that she was never married.
The subject of mothers made Alyce remember her own mother, and that led to a bit of short-lived sadness, which died away quickly as Chase changed the subject to the test. She was in all honors, though she wasn't sure if Chase was. She jogged her memory for a few moments, trying to remember a test. She never studied, really.
If she did study, she would stress herself out, which would lead to one of her panic attacks. She had never been put on proper medication for them, but they weren't frequent. Needless to say, stress caused her panic attacks, which usually led to her simply passing out after a few seconds of hyperventilating.
"Uhm. It shouldn't be too hard, right? I mean, I don't really study. It's the test in Algebra, right? We reviewed that yesterday, remember?" She gave him a slight smile. Now she remembered. It was the test on the memorized formulas. They'd written them down on homework assignments multiple times, so she guessed that Chase would have no problem remembering the formula, and how to plug the given numbers into it.

Chase looked into her eyes. He was generally amazing at reading eyes, there was no feeling that you could hide if he could see your eyes. he couldn't read hers too well though. There were a couple feelings mixed in there. Maybe a bit of confusion? He couldn't be sure, which unnerved him. Her hiding it so well made him feel uncomfortable. He tried to wipe the confusion off his face, though he wasn't sure that there had been confusion there anyways.
No, it shouldn't be too hard, those formulas were extremely easy. Even the people who aren't in all honors classes can probably get them. I didn't have a problem with them, though I couldn't say them now. I do much better under pressure.
He saw the light coming from the end of the tunnel. They were going to be in the hall soon, and he had taken his hood off. Putting it on now would be suspicious, but so would his knees wobbling in the sunlight. He decided to throw his parka over his head, this would be better than the option of him fainting from too much sunlight.
I think we are about to get to our stop. It was nice talking to you Alyce. I don't get to get to know people very much. Not the kind of person who really gets close to anyone.
His mouth thinned when he thought of that. He had had a lot of friends before he was a vampire. Vampire. Gosh that word came up so much in his mind. His life was a constant battle against his problem. If anyone found out, he would be hunted until they found him. He might even have to resort to biting someone. That was something he never wanted to do while sane. Sometimes he broke out in moments of uncontrolled insanity when he craved blood too much, but he didn't think it counted. He couldn't control what he was doing during those moments.
Why am I thinking of this so much today?
He watched the light at the end of the tunnel grow nearer and nearer. Light made him nervous. He couldn't help who he was, and wearing a large parka not during the winter wasn't good. He was also the most vulnerable up there. One person bumping into him could send him throwing his hood off. That wouldn't be good.

Ooc:// Soo sorry about not replying to this sooner. Hectic, hectic life. >.>

Alyce was surprised at how the boy's attitude about the test changed so suddenly. Perhaps her encouraging words had helped him that much? Well, they helped others, but she could safely say that they hadn't done that for anyone she knew of. Perhaps this 'Chase' guy would be different in the aspects of being able to be changed.
She inwardly scolded herself for thoughts of changing someone. One of her good friends, when the girl was looking for a new boyfriend, once her old one had broken up with her, Alyce's friend would find the most damaged kid around and turn him into a little 'project'. She'd try to change him, but her friend would always just end up getting hurt...
She listened to him talk, finding his voice strangely soothing. After running all the way to the subway stop, she'd been stressed, tired, and in need of a good cup of espresso. But, though her family- what was left of it- was quite wealthy, she couldn't just stop on the drop of a dime and buy a cup of coffee. Things weren't that simple for the girl.
"Well, I'm glad that you've decided to talk to me. You seem like a nice guy. Maybe we can hang out some time," Alyce said, offering the blonde boy in front of her a bright smile, her dark eyelashes closing shut for a moment, then opening to the light of the subway station.
"Oh, well the time passed by faster than it usually does..." She scratched her head as the subway slowly halted, and the sliding doors on the side of the cart opened, allowing the passengers to file out into the station, and disperse to the places that they needed to be. For Alyce and Chase, it would be only a few blocks to the school.
Before stepping off of the subway and into the crowd, Alyce turned around to look at Chase once more, testing to see if he would follow her- walk with her to school. It wouldn't be strange or odd if he did. In fact, Alyce would quite enjoy it. He'd held a stable conversation on the subway.

Come on... She has to trust you if she will ever believe that you really saw her doppelganger, and also for her not to kill you if she finds out you're a vampire. Do it... Just walk, holding a conversation isn't that hard...
Chase kept nagging himself. He had to do something,or she would die if he didn't. His shyness always got in his way. It wasn't really that hard to talk to her, and maybe he could save a life by overcoming a fear. He just had to put one foot in front of the other.
There we go. The voice inside his head purred. That's a good boy. Why are you so nervous anyway? It isn't like she will bite off your head. If anything, you are going to bite off her head, so just relax and breath. In and out. Good, good, you are almost there. Just walk a little bit faster... that's it, good boy.
He felt as awkward as possible as he tried to start up a conversation. His tongue rolled up in the back of his mouth in defiance. It never occurred to him how hard it was to start a conversation, generally he avoided the concept all together. Finally, he decided to focus on the book report they had to write in honors English. Yes, English was his subject, and he was pretty sure she was in his English class. Nothing like a good book to use as an excuse to talk to someone.
So, how did you like the book we read in English class? I thought it was pretty good, you can't get much better than the classics. I especially like Charles Dickens and C. S. Lewis. Do you have any favorite books?

Alyce had only made it a few seconds alone, parting her way through the relatively dense crowd down in the subway station, before she heard a voice near to her. It took her a moment to register just who the voice belonged to, given that she usually tried to identify a voice before turning to find who exactly it was that spoke.
Chase.
The name popped into her head almost immediately. His voice had an interesting quality that she couldn't name, but she wouldn't admit that easily.
Her head turned slightly as she walked onward, glancing at Chase for a good few seconds, taking in the details of his face under that parka of his. Her green eyes shut for a moment of peace as she turned her head forward again, nearly bumping into a person whose face wouldn't stick in her mind. Some guy with a really big nose, but nothing else notable.
"Yeah. The book is really good. The first few pages were hard to get through, but now that we're in the middle of the plot, my father's struggling with me at home to get me to close it." She let out a light laugh. As he asked about her favorite kind of book, she was stunned for a moment. She'd never really thought about her favorite books. Or genre, for a matter of fact.
Though, after a moment of thought, she easily answered the question. "I'm a fan of James Patterson books, and the Southern Vampire novels by Charlaine Harris. Both authors on the older side, but not too old, I guess. Still modern enough to write more novels for me to read." She gave a small smile into the sunlight as she walked up the steps of the subway station two at a time and into the open street.
A light breeze swept some of her dark brown hair behind her, and she let out a pleasant hum.

Vampire novels huh? Gosh, I hope she doesn't think that those are just fiction, because one of them is coming true right in front of her eyes.
I'm a fan of James Patterson too, though I haven't read any of Charlaine Harris's novels. I suppose I'll check her out when I have time. I can say I have gotten lost in some of these books either. If i had any parents, they probably would need to remind me to eat. I can't even remember the last time I did. I actually read one so long into the night I slept through the entire day. I woke up on a Thursday and thought it was Wednesday.
He smiled. That had been hilarious, he went to school and was piled with late work without even knowing he had missed a day. if he had any friends, they would have shared quite the laugh that day. He couldn't really believe that he had told her about that. Talking to her was easier than her thought it would be. Maybe he could tell her now.
You can do it. You have to do it. There is no way around it, the sooner the better. Just tell her. Tell her now, you have no idea how far in that doppelganger was, it could attack her today.
He took in a deep breath, and relaxed all of his muscles. Waiting wasn't going to make it any easier, more likely it would make it harder, but he just couldn't do it. It was too hard, too difficult to say...
Finally, he got reprieve when they reached the school building. She wasn't in his first class, and he wouldn't have to talk to her for a while.
Oh, we are a little late, we had better hurry. Talk to you later.
He ran down the hallway to his locker, and hid his face in it. He was scared. Scared for her life, scared that she wouldn't believe him, and scared that if he told her, she would kill him. It didn't seem like something she would do, but he was a vampire. People killed vampires for no reason, and she might just get scared of him when he told her. Maybe in a few days he could get himself to say it, but not today. Not now.
