Severus started preparing the ingredients, his book open in front of him. Only, he prepared them his way, smashing instead of cutting and mincing instead of slicing.

Lily started on her ingredients as well, following the instructions perfectly. She peeked over at Severus', watching as he prepared his ingredients differently. She knew that he'd still do it right, though. How'd he know all that stuff? She wasn't going to try to copy him, though. It wouldn't work for her.

Lily took his book hesitantly, flipping to a random page. The first thing she noticed was the dark, familiar handwriting that scribbled all over the pages. "You wrote in this?"

Lily nodded, obeying. Her eyes scanned through the pages; there were notes for even the hardest of potions, even ones Lily'd never heard of. She studied the book, more especially the curly handwriting, for the majority of the class.
