Bhreac lay sleeping in her den. She had it all to herself, and it was all covered in moss that she and some other wolves had fetched for her a few days before. She rolled over in her sleep, kicking her paws in the air violently. She let out a whimper before opening her eyes. It was all a dream. But it seemed real. That day, almost seemed like it was yesterday...
When the two packs weren't at war. When her father was alpha, he managed to launch an attack on Vermont pack. She was a pup then, and she clearly remembered how her father came into the den where Rei stayed in. That year, her father wanted the pack to be rather large, so he gave permission for many females to mate. At that time, there had always been an empty den, and that was now occupied by Rei, and the other females that were expecting pups or nursing them. Her father came in and licked Rei's cheek, before snuggling my underbelly with his nose. A wolf entered the den, an old wolf named Yagg, who was always arrogant and bossy. He growled something inaudible to young Breach, then her father ran out of the den. She heard the thundering of paws as almost all that pack was heading to battle. Breach, of course, had to stay behind. She also remembered the fact that the two strongest fighters were to stay behind. The two wolves paced and growled angrily, for they had tranined and practiced to go into this battle, but now were on guard duty. Then, a loud howl sounded from the mountain that was west of Baltic Pack. It was rich with prey, and wolves from Baltic Pack had to prove themselves by killing two large pieced of prey and surviving a night at the peak of the mountain. Then. the two wolves went silent. I was nudged back into the den, and pushed into the corner with other pups and her littermates. But that was not what happened when it did. She was out in the clearing, playing. Then, a pack of fifteen wolves from Vermont Pack had invaded the clearing. She remembered the snarling, the howls and the gruesome bloodshed. It was too much still for Breach to take in. She remembered being hidden in mud and moss in the den, while the she wolves went to fight a battle they had no chance of winning. Her father had arrived with five wolves when the battle was almost over. He had been brave, and launched himself at the largest wolf's neck. He was then pinned by three other wolves. She only knew this, because she was found, for she had a strong scent from only being born a couple months ago. She had been forced to watch her father be bitted and clawed repeatedly, and Breach herself was to lay by his side and watch him die. Every wolf had died, except for the leader of Vermont Pack, and a few wolves from Baltic Pack, including herself. But Baltic Pack had gotten the very large portion of territory that her father had tried to hard to obtain.
She covered her paws over her ears, the dream still taking place in her head. She whimpered and whined, for she never got over the depressing event in her life. She had put it behind her, and tried to hide the fact that she never got over her father's death, but it was hard. She had always hated Vermont Pack ever since, because she knew they were the ones responsible for the deaths. But they weren't at the same time. The Alpha who had been the sole survivor died of old age. The other wolves weren't old enough to have been alive when it happened. She stood up finally, and shook herself off. She sighed, and then began to clean herself.

Sek was in the process of dragging a large doe home. He hadn't killed it, but it probably had died of old age. It would be a bit dry and stringy, but his pack needed food. The doe didn't actually look old, it looked like it had only had one fawn in it's lifetime, which was odd, because deer in this region had four or five in their lifetimes. But that depends if they were killed by bears or wolves. He stopped and tore a piece off of the deer. He ate it, but it tasted odd. Maybe because he was hungry and paranoid, but it didn't seem right. He shook his head, and continued to drag the doe back to camp.

"Look at this, Kaloqis."

There it was. The sneer in Osera's voice. A white smile, strangely unwelcome in the spring sun.

"Pathetic."

Glowing bright, she stood looking down at the wolf from the  mountain, the one they liked to call their own. Their own secret space. Bound to his jaws was a thinning, withered deer, unscathed except for the purple slashes the trees threw over the heaving Sek. Sek, the first wolf the pair had seen in five days. Osera and Kaloqis had journeyed off together but had restricted their pilgrimage within the boundaries if the territory, as was the norm for wolves. Just to share their private dreams of seeing the sunset from a different country, or having no alpha to report back to, or selective permission to have a litter.

"It's true, Osera, your kill is far more admirable," Kaloqis remarked cynically. But he lacked any trace of a scolding, or disapproval. There was a suggestion of a grin on his own lips. These days something was compelling him to tolerate her... shallowness. Now more than ever, she was a lovely sight for the eye. For his, anyway.

Osera swung her tail guiltily. Of course, she'd caught nothing. So she decided to change tge subject. "Let's follow him for a bit."

The wolves turned and clattered down broken boulders torn apart by the thawing and reformation of ice, away from Sek. Then they skirted left and began to creep through the budding conifers and the crackling golden grass. Osera was a shifting island of snow, whereas Kaloqis was hardly discernible against the brush.

They divided and went for Sek in a parallel, sweeping invasion. She approached with her tongue hanging between the ridges of her glittering teeth, although she wasn't hungry for meat. Kaloqis had his mouth shut but there was a suggestive coating in his eyes, as if anticipating a quarrel between two wolves. As if he was looking forward to one.

"That's an interesting find," Kaloqis said, looming nearer. He inspected the kill with his nose, ears folded back oh so carefully in his rising distaste. "Bhreac should be satisfied."

Osera sniffed the deer once, then flattened her ears and approached Kaloqis again with a soft suggestion of a sneer. Neither wolves were fussy eaters, but if implying so meant discomfort to other wolves, then it was all a game for them both. A game of spite, and one they practiced regularly.

"We'll journey to her with you. Help fend off any maggots that might take a fancy for it, yes?"

Sek stood rigid, letting a low growl escape from his throat. "I'm not feeding your pack." he growled. He felt a bit stupid, letting wolves sneak up on him this easy. "I didn't kill it either. I found it, lying dead on the ground." Sek began to grow nervous, no he probably had no choice but to travel with Osera and Kalquois to Bhreac. Ah, how he feared that she-wolf with no sympathy, and the one that was trying to rule both packs.
"And now, if you you excuse me, I should be heading back to Alara."

Kyric's nose shot into the air. Something didn't smell quite right. He recognized the scent of his packmate, Sek, but not the other scents that were coming from the same general direction. A sickly sweet smell made him want to tuck his tail in and hide, but the stronger scent of other wolves he didn't recognize set him on edge, sending a warning flag into his brain.

Quickly, Kyric set off, his lithe form loping gracefully over the land as he began to track the other male from his pack. He couldn't say he knew Sek that well, but the other male was bold, just like Kyric acted sometimes, so it was hard not to notice him from time to time. The long golden grass brushed uncomfortably across his dark furred sides, and occasionally one of his paws landed on the end of a stalk, making him wince as it dug into his pad.

Kyric slowed, crouching lower in the grass than ever, his bones sticking out through his pelt. He made a mental note to eat more the next chance he got, assuming the kill was big enough. Ah, there was Sek! And... Osera and Kalquois. That couldn't be good. Kyric tensed, and leaned back. He wouldn't jump out just yet. It was possible that Sek might get away... just then Kyric noticed the withered deer Sek was with. Well, that complicated things. Kyric knew their pack needed food, but he didn't see any way that Sek could get both himself and the deer out of there without a fight, and then it would be two against one, unless Kyric jumped in. He was torn. He didn't want to cause a problem, which he surely would if he went out there, but at the same time he didn't want his packmate to get dragged to the other pack, not with Bhreac as the leader. Kyric shuddered. Baltic's Alpha showed no sympathy. She was the last wolf Kyric would want to be involved in a situation like this, but then again, members of her pack were involved. Of course.

---

Listhia paced around, glancing into the woods every now and then, examining the new growth on the oaks and maples that grew in this part of the forest. This time when she looked up, she spotted a rather fat rabbit shuffling through the leaves. She grinned, time to hunt.

With a few quick bounds and a quick bit to the neck, the rabbit was dead. Listhia picked up her kill, and trotted over to where she would be sheltered by a large oak tree. Quickly she began to tear into it, savoring the taste of the rabbit, who seemed to have been fairly young, judging by it's extremely soft fur.

OOC: Oopsoopsoops. I forgot, Sek's from the Vermont pack. 8(
And... whose territory are they actually on? Who's trespassing on who's ground? xD If Sek's on Bhreac's turf, then, in my post, Kaloqis and Osera could be leaving for reinforcements. Or something.

"Alara?" Kaloqis echoed. "Why, she must be one of the rangers you Vermonts had to adopt. You wolves seem to be good at doing that."

Osera rounded Sek and the deer, several times, stretching out broad, slow circles in the jagged grass. Kaloqis watched her restless eyes, jumping at every angle, seeing things behind him. She must have noticed something because, bitingly, she crooned: "You know we could probably find something better closer to home. Let's let the pups enjoy their scavengings. Any wolf with standards would prefer something that wasn't found under the feet of crows."

Behind the black wolf was Osera's glaring, silvered face. Seen only to Kaloqis was her steady stare of urgency. There was something else out there. And she didn't want to be in any peril.

Kaloqis stared away from Sek. Watching. Tense as rock. A rising raven flickered black against the blue. He heard the bellow of a stag.

"Keep it then," Kaloqis muttered, swinging his snout closer to Sek's. "Bhreac would prefer Baltic deer. But in time, all of your prey will be Baltic. You should think about joining us soon, you know. Everything Vermont will be renamed soon enough." He glanced at Osera. "When we have more wolves."

With a soft uff, he turned tail, and trotted away. Osera moved like a white shadow, passing Sek a snap, before she took off after her companion, through the brush at a hurried trot. They ran and never glanced back.

[[Just to make things less complicated, Sek accidently went a few tail lengths over the border. x3]]

Stupid, stupid, stupid... Sek thought. His hunger had gotten to him and he had crossed the border to get that single deer. He had hoped noone had seen him, for he was humiliated already from looking like a coward. He sniffed the air. He tasted the sweet scent that Vermont wolves had. It wasn't himself, but one of his denmates. He did a quick look-around, but didn't see any wolves. He sighed, then began to drag the deer back over the border of Vermont Pack.

Bhreac exited the den and walked out onto the flat chunk of rock right outside her den. It was fairly high, and you had to either climb or jump to get up and into her den. She raised her head, and opened her mouth to taste the air. The stale taste of packmembers, a herd of elk, and a sweet scent. Trespasser! She would reconize the scent anywhere, the sweet smelling wolves that lived in a pack she hated. Vermont Pack. They had wonderful meadows which would often lure the prey off of her territory. She wouldn't get there in time, or she might-depending on whether a wolf from her pack had spotted the wolf and confronted it. Then, she might be able to take matters in her own paws if she got there. With one swift jump, she lept off of the large slab of rock. She shook the last of moss and pine needles from her fur, and headed towards the scent of the trespasser.

OOC: Okay c:
And, um, I'm not hoping to appear like a know-it-all, but wolves can't retract their claws. Only cats can do the "sheath and un-sheathing" thing. Wolves mainly use their claws for digging, things like that, and since they don't need to be kept sharp, it doesn't matter if they're unprotected. Their teeth are their best weapons. :)

Tall pines and brittle conifers enveloped the wolves in shadow, coating the sky in a dense wing of dark green. They ran for a good while through the bed of needles and fallen trees, through the echoing shrieks of birds, before Osera slowed and swept her nose across the forest floor. Kaloqis whirled around and copied her.

"Deer," Kaloqis said. "White-tailed deer. Two bucks and several more females. Hmph. A few of them are pregnant."

Osera went to a fallen log several metres away. She found the devoured stubs of mushrooms, which had inevitably been chewed off by the deer. "They were here earlier today. Look." Osera's tongue flapped out. "Shall we round everyone up?"

"No, we can manage. You're smaller and faster than me. Just chase them my way and we could bring down... a buck, let's say"

"What about the antlers, eh? Those can hurt."

"When they actually grow, Osera - in the late spring. Winter has almost finished." He lifted his face to the chill of the sky, pale behind the canopy.

"Oh... I never really took note of that."

"No. And you want to start your own pack? With a leader like you, life would be terrifying!"

Her lips worked into an offended snarl, caught off-guard by his criticism. "Lay off me."

Kaloqis' eyes and voice softened, like the foam of a river. "You just need watch the world around you. Memorise cycles, sounds, smells, patterns. Study everything from the seasons to the things you eat, if you want your pups to be survivors. Intelligent survivors. Simply knowing when a buck grows and sheds his antlers could save your life if you were starving." He offered her an apologetic nudge on the neck, which she accepted, cleansed again. Kaloqis, uncomfortably, noticed that adoration. "Now come on."

They turned around and began to follow the trail. A hoofprint here. Some droppings there. They paused at every find but their delays grew shorter and their bounds grew longer, livelier. They left the conifer forest and crossed green clearings, paled in the shadows with a hazy frost.

Bhreac stopped dead at a tiny pool of blood. She sniffed the blood, then reeled back with disgust. The scent was from a deer, and a wolf. She noticed that the dirt had been stirred, and a number of pawprints were around it. She sniffed the air. It was fresh. The deer couldn't be that far away. She also tasted a different wolf. She whipped her head around. A bush trembled, and the trees rustled. She walked over to the bush and sniffed it. The scent was strong. She let out a snort before running off to follow the deer scent.

((I jus tlost my entire post. I'm really pissed off right now. I'm just going to summarize what happened and maybe write it later because I worked really hard on it.

Alara saw a shape moving in the shadows. It was her brother Aika, but she didn't know it till he jumped her. They argued for a bit before Alera trotted off and Aika went to investigate something in the forest.

Keep this in mind while I rewrite my entire intro....))

OOC: I gotta finish this later...

Eight stood under the white birches that shone like bone. Kaloqis glared at the two stags, whose angular heads were light of antlers. He lay by himself in the yellowed grass. Osera, he knew, was approaching them from a seperate angle.

As he watched he saw her rise. But instead of running, she walked. Casual, as if mildly interested, but acute. She balanced her approach between padding closer and pausing. One of the stags gave a snort and the other seven jumped awake. Osera stared back.

She walked closer.

The herd darted. By the time Osera had reached the copse where they'd stood, every one of their plumelike tails had vanished. Kaloqis took off after her.

Ahead of them stretched a meadow edged with more sparse woods, but the deer streaked across the open ground. They kept their frightened eyes on Osera's approaching form, who always proceeded at a steady lope. She kept them moving, kept them working their legs. Kaloqis was too far away to speak to her, to praise her on her tactic. She was flushing them out into the open just as he'd taught her, a summer ago. Rarely had she been given the chance to display her hunting prowess by herself. Not since... Since...

Kaloqis caught up with Osera. Much to his surprise her pretty eyes were downhearted, her ears angled back in frustration. "We will never catch them at this speed," she growled. "They're so... Far away..."

"No, we won't," Kaloqis replied collectedly. "but that's not our aim. We want to exhaust them to the point where they cannot defend themselves or escape. With this chase we will tire them out. And then we willl test them further, to see who is worth allowing to survive, and who will make the easiest meal for us."

"Watch them, Osera. Watch who will be easiest to kill. Who is limping, if at all? And who must we avoid completely?"

"But none of them are limping."

"Not now."

OOC: I'm just waiting for a reply.
Has everybody really left this thread already? I mean, it's understandable if you have things in real life to see to. No rush to post.
But damn, do threads die after so little time. :c All that effort to make characters, all that anticipation, and then... it just drops to the bottom of the Forums again. I really enjoy roleplaying and I just wish I could join a thread that lasted. Eheh...
Clouding, if you're up for roleplaying, then I'll carry on with you. If needs must I'm happy to make a bunch of other characters.
