[[ D'em shoulder muscles. <3 ]]
Connor noticed the girl's reluctance to continue the conversation. Not that he could blame her. He wasn't exactly the type you wanted to take home and show your father. He wasn't the type you'd take home at all, or show anyone at all, for that matter. He was... that secret boyfriend you didn't even tell your friends about because of shame. Yupp, he was that guy.
Connor saw the girl clench her jaw before her answer. Just what every guy wanted to see! But, Wisconsin? That was a long ways from Oregon. More than halfway across the nation. Either the girl really, really loved her family for just a visit, or something was wrong. Maybe a death in the family? Or a coming death. But, that wasn't any of his business. Yet.
Connor found himself wondering if she had to leave much behind moving here. Maybe she was married? He quickly looked at her hands. No ring. Well, he was in the clear there. But a boyfriend? He quickly glanced at the girl again. It had to be impossible for her to not have a boyfriend. She was that natural kind of pretty. And natural kind of pretty always had a boyfriend.
"La Pointe, eh?" Connor finally responded. He chewed on his lip as he tried to think of some things to do with Wisconsin. Nothing came to mind except those Cheese-hats that those football fans wore. He doubted that she had one of those hats, though it would be entertaining to see her wear one. Okay, maybe entertaining would be the wrong word. The one he was looking for leaned more to 'hilarious' or 'extremely comical'.
"Never been. But I have lived here for quite some time," Connor said. He used his fingers to count out the years. "Seven straight, I believe." He put his hands back into his pockets, feeling like he should probably be embarrassed. Hah. Right. He didn't get embarrassed. You have to have some sliver of self doubt for that emotion.
Connor glanced down at the imaginary watch on his wrist. With a soft whistle, he said, "Wow, look at the time." He could sense the girl was not very comfortable with his presence. "I should probably get goin'." He glanced back at his old table. Keith was looking at him with an amused ex pression. Damn him.
"Oh, my name's Connor Short. If you have any questions about town, or anything like that, look me up in the phonebook." Connor shot her a killer grin, thanking God for those four horrible years that he wore braces. Without waiting for her reply, Connor walked back to his table, sitting in the chair with an audible 'oomph'. He pointed to a very smiley Keith and stuck his tongue out. How mature of him.

The second this 'Conner Short' walked away, I think the relief was obvious. I could breathe again without feeling like I was being hovered over. I was still curious as to why he had been speaking to me in the first place. Uncrossing my ankles once more, and tearing my eyes away from my fingers, I watched Conner go.
Too see his friend giving him an amused smile. While Conner is sticking his tongue out at him.
My stomach dropped. His friend put him up to talking to me? What, did I look like a joke? Was it some kind of embarrassing dare? My cheeks burned. I had let myself believe, before I saw that look on his friend's face, that he had actually wanted to talk to me. I couldn't help but let my imagination roam, seeing as behind those ugly tattoos and piercings, he was slightly, or extremely, attractive. But I was wrong. They were just two stupid boys I shouldn't have wasted my time glancing at. Sighing and shaking my head slightly at my stupid self, I grabbed my laptop case without another glance at the guy. Yeah, you're so funny, Conner.
Leaving The Coffee House, the smell of the air took away the tension in my shoulders. Everything in me wanted to run in the snow like the kids had done. I saw the little boy that resembled me earlier walking passed me. He kept glancing back at the other kids and my heart went out to him. Who cares about that stupid Conner. He probably was just an egotistic maniac that wanted to see me blush when I looked at him. His ego had to feed off of something, right?
Besides, I loved kids. Just playing with them made me feel better. Coming on my knees, not worrying about the snow messing up my clothes, I grabbed the little boys arm gently and leaned my head down so my blue eyes could meet his. "Hey." I said softly, his sad face breaking my heart. My lips pouted in a show that I acknowledged his sadness. "What's wrong, buddy? The kids aren't playing with you?" The boy's cheeks were red, and I could tell that it wasn't from the cold. His eyes had filled with tears, and I sighed, tearing my eyes away to look at the other kids. This is why I liked kids so much better then people my age. An apology was all it took before the anger was gone and they could all play again.
It only took a second for me to leave the little boy, find a little ginger boy, and have them meet. They were playing together in mere seconds. I smirked at the two before going to the sidewalk. The kids had thrown snow balls at me as I had tried to find a friend for the little boy, and I ended up playing with them for a moment. Now I was covered in snow, but at least I was smiling after that embarrassing conversation with Conner at the Coffee House. I couldn't help but feel like a loser, being the one chosen for a stupid dare or something. Or, I could always just be assuming the worst, when he was smirking about something else.
Either way, I was glad I was done with the guy. Walking on the sidewalk, I waved to the little brown haired, blue eyed boy that I found an odd love for to get to my car. My parents were probably worried sick by now.

"Look, you've made your girl upset with your childish antics."
Connor looked at his friend curiously before looking back at the girl - he never did get her name -, surprised that she was leaving so soon. Perhaps if he knew her better, or if he was actually good at reading emotions, he would be able to see she was upset, or angry. But, alas, the boy was quite ignorant to all emotional things female.
"I don't know what you're talking about, Keith. She's fine? Look, she's playing with the kids."
Connor scrunched up his nose as he watched Paradise help the kid, or whatever she was doing. He was never a kid person. They were messy, disobedient, loud and crapped their pants. What was he supposed to like about that? Maybe that was just babies... Eh, same thing. Until you got a job, you were a baby in his eyes.
Now animals! There was something that Connor could appreciate. He was like that weird dog whisperer guy off of Animal Planet, only with all animals, and without that awful accent. His old family dog, Charlie, knew all the tricks in the bag: Sit, shake, switch, lay down, roll over, beg, speak, and dance. That's right. Connor taught his dog how to dance. And he was damn proud of it, too.
"Helloo? Connor? Earth to Connor?"
"Huh?" Connor turned his head only to see his friend snapping next to his face. In an irritated voice, he asked, "What? Why are you snapping at me?"
Keith leaned back in his seat and shook his head. "Well, if you must know, Mr. Cranky Pants, you were completely in another world, smiling like an idiot. You were just lucky that girl didn't noticed you were staring at her."
Connor raised an eyebrow at his friend, questions written all over his face. He turned just in time to see Paradise wave at the kid from before and walk away. Wait, when did that ginger kid get there? He wasn't there before....
"Wow. I really did space out, huh?"
Keith snorted in response, from laughter or just because, Connor did not know.
"Yeah. Yeah, ya did. So, tell me, what did you learn?" Keith leaned in, resting his head in his hands, elbows propped up on the small table between the two.
Connor looked away from the window, and the two little boys playing, and turned to his friend. He began to count the things he learned on his hand.
"Moved from La Pointe, Wisconsin. Moved, just not visiting. Here for family, think someone's sick, but she didn't say it directly. Possible boyfriend, never discussed the topic though. No ring, so if she does have one, it's not serious. She seems like that traditional type of girl. You know, roses on the first date, taking you home to meet the parents type of girl. I'll do some research later tonight when I get home. You ever heard of La Pointe?"
Keith stared wide eyed at his friend. He had only been there for a few minutes. How in the hell could he tell she seemed like a traditional type of person? The friend just shook his head, both at his friend, and the question. "Never heard of it; must be small."
Connor rubbed his stubbled chin, noting that he could use a shave. "Huh. Good, it'll make my job easier. Well, I gotta go visit Uncle Shane. Heard he fell again, the old bastard." Connor shook his head, threw five dollars on the counter and left his friend without saying goodbye. Typical Connor.
The man walked outside, pulling on his black leather gloves. It was still fairly early in the day, so the hospital visiting hours were still open. He grinned as his toy came into view. By 'toy', Connor means his sick motorcycle. He shoved his riding helmet on and revved the engine. Music to his ears. He pulled out of the parking lot before even looking for traffic. Sure, he got a few fingers and plenty of choice words from it, but hey, he didn't care.
[[ I feel like this post is just... oddly long. xD
So, is Paradise's mom in the hospital? 'Cause that might be a good meeting place for them later... Unexpectedly, of course. o.o ]]

[[ Finally done. I should get paid for doing stuff like that. >.< ]]
I pulled out of the parking lot, using my map to find a way to the hospital my mom stayed at. Eden Medical Center. ( Some random medical center in California. o-o ) Checking the time, I realized I was about thirty minutes late. Knowing my dad, I'd get some kind of lecture later on how 'he raised me to be punctual'. I was just glad to have my contacts today so I wouldn't have to see his ex pression to my glasses.
I couldn't help wanting my father's approval. He expected so much and I gave him so little to be impressed on, compared to my sister. I wasn't looking forward to seeing her there. She resented me for leaving our home place when we did. Now she had to spend her nights off taking care of mom and visiting her when dad wasn't able too. A shiver went through my bones at the thought of her being here. I sure hope she wasn't.
Pulling into the parking lot of Eden Medical Center, I quickly jumped out, locked my car, and ran inside. Now I was 45 minutes late. I sure hoped visiting hours were still open around here. Coming to the counter, I asked as kindly as I could in my rush if visiting hours were still open. The curt lady behind the desk lifted an eyebrow and pointed to a sign that told the times visiting hours were. Obviously, I was in the time that I could visit my mother. With a embarrassed smile, I told her the name, how I knew her, my name... The information that was always asked for.
I sat at the waiting room, tapping my foot in a impatient matter. The nurse had said I needed to wait a couple minutes to make sure my mom was up for visitors. I tried explaining that my mother new I was coming, but they were set on speaking to my mother first.
My eyes went to a mirror across from where I sat. The snow that had gone in my hair outside made my brown hair look wet and greasy. Wanting to get my mind off of waiting for the nurse to come back, I stood up and went to the full body mirror. I bent down to shake my hair a bit, bring a more messy look so the wetness wouldn't be as noticeable, before bringing it back up. Running my hand through my brown locks, I tried wiping off as much snow around me as I could. It was then that I realized I might look quite stupid fixing myself. As if my boyfriend was the one I was meeting and I had to make sure I was looking good. I rolled my eyes, my dad was going to notice the snow no matter what I tried to do, and turned to see the nurse coming back to lead me to my mother's room.

[[ Vin is a genius. I know.
xD ]]
"Ah, Charlie, M'boy!"
Connor chuckled at his delusional Uncle as he entered the man's room. He walked over to the bed and shook the 80-year-old man's hand firmly. He pulled his hand away and rubbed it. Damn, Uncle Shane still had a strong grip for quite an old man.
"Don't just stand there! Up my morphine, boy!"
Connor shook his head at Shane, not caring to explain he wasn't a doctor to his Uncle. Everytime he came in there, which was about 3 times a week, Shane thought he was the doctor checking up. A month ago, Connor just gave up explaining who he was. Stupid Alzheimer's.
The man on the bed looked Connor up and down, as if debating if he should talk to him or not. He took a frail hand and rubbed his bruised face, a result of the recent fall.
"You look a lot like my nephew, you know that?"
"Ah, your great-nephew, Connor?"
"Yupp. The screw up of a boy. My son always thought the third boy would turn out the best, you know? Having the two older ones as such great rolemodels. You know what he's doing now, doc? He works with inking people! What type of living is that?"
Connor sat down in the guest chair and just nodded at what the old man said. He had heard it all before. It was the same thing every few days. You look like my great-nephew. He's a screw up. His father hates him. Yadda yadda yadda. It never got old.
"So, tell me Charlie, how is that girl you were dating? Samantha, was it?"
Connor chuckled at his Uncle. "Samantha and I aren't dating. We were two girlfriends ago. I don't have a girlfriend now." Connor paused and looked up at Shane. He sighed under that prying stare.
"Well, if you must know, my friend and I made a wager. I have 11 more months to have a girl fall in love with me. It's going to be a lot of work, but I think it might be worth it. I've only talked to her once, but I can tell she's amazing. Pretty, too. You'd like her, Shane."
"I like all girls!"
Connor chuckled once more and patted the old man's hand. Of course he liked all girls. He used to be quiet a womanizer. Granted, that meant dancing with two woman at a ball instead of just one. Still, for his time, that was quite debonair of him.
"I'll see you in a few days, Shane."
The only response Connor received was a light snore. The old man had already fallen asleep on him! What an old fart. Connor just shook his head and walked to the door. He opened it and stepped outside, nearly colliding with a nurse.
"I'm so sorry, ma'am. Forgive me," He said, gently grasping her arm to stabilize the woman. He didn't even realize that the girl from last night - Paradise - was behind the nurse.

[[ I just looked back up at the top when you first said this idea. You said, 'later on'. So, technically, you are right. This time I fail. D: Sorry. :c ]]
When I finally felt presentable for my father, at least close to it, I finally allowed to turn around fully to see the nurse. I gave her a small smile, glad to see the nurse's ex pression didn't show bad news. Just as the nurse opened her mouth to say something a long the lines of, 'Your mother is this way', she was jolted by someone who nearly bumped into her.
I wasn't worried about the woman. It was that voice. The voice I couldn't put a name too.
"I'm so sorry, ma'am. Forgive me,"
Where have I heard that voice before? It was that kind of voice that could make a girl melt, or in Paradise's case, shiver. I clenched my jaw as I saw the face of the voice. It was him. Him. Conner. The guy that decided it was 'funny' to come talk to me, like he was giving me a pity flirt or something. What was he doing here? I was supposed never see him again! Wasn't this town big enough to hide in?
I swallowed, my cheeks burning. Maybe I could sneak around him. The last thing I needed was that guy deciding to talk to me again. Maybe another pity flirt? Seeing as it would be a funny joke. The beating of my heart sounded loud in my ears. There was no way around his vision, unless I wanted to run as fast as I could to the stair way. The idea sounded grand, but I needed to follow the nurse.
"This way, Paradise."
The nurse finally said after a "It's alright." to Conner. Oh gosh, why had she said my name? Did she want Conner to notice me? I usually blended in really well. Maybe, just maybe, this low life wouldn't remember my name. Sighing, I kept my eyes straight ahead. Acting as though I didn't even know him. Following the nurse, I gave a small smile in her direction. My cheeks only burning even more as I passed Conner. I couldn't help it. I looked up. Our eyes met and I instinctively looked back down at my shoes. Curiosity overtook my shyness, and for a moment I wondered why he was here. Did he have a ill parent too? Sympathy, I allowed only for a moment, for him came before I turned and followed the nurse.
Maybe he would understand that I didn't want him speaking to me through my obvious show of ignoring him, before I had finally met his eyes.

[[ You don't have to apologize, CH. xD It's all good~ c: ]]
"See you next week, Shirley!" Connor called to the nurse he had bumped into. He gave her a soft smile, one that made him actually look vulnerable, and a short wave. The nurse just kept walking, raising her hand to show that she had heard him. The man chuckled. Typical...
Paradise? Connor finally turned his attention to the person that the nurse was leading. Well, lookie-there. It was the girl from earlier. And she was obviously avoiding his eye. Understandably. This was a fine establishment. If he were her, he would have adverted his eyes as well.
Connor looked down the hallway, then back to Paradise. Paradise Whitfield, journalist for the local back at her nice home in La Pointe, Wisconsin. Yes, Connor had indeed looked her up. He was thankful enough to find a website for the paper she wrote for. He called up the editor, nice man. Told him all about her... And Justin. Let's just say that he knew his job was going to be a lot harder than originally planned.
Connor kept his eyes on Paradise as she walked by him. He wondered if she was even going to notice that he was alive. And... Yupp. Eye contact. Those Dark blue eyes of hers connected with the strange-green color of his. Every fiber of his being was telling him to say hi, or wave, or even crack a smile before she looked away. Too late. By the time Connor opened his mouth to say something, she had already looked away.
"I hope your mother gets better, Paradise," Connor finally said, his voice soft and genuinely kind. He didn't know if he heard her, he didn't care. He figured that her mother would be in there for a while, and if he held his weekly visits, they were bound to meet again.

[[ -gasp- Conner called the editor. He's officially a stalker. |D ]]
Once catching up to the nurse with no sign of acknowledgement from Conner, I felt relieved. And a bit angry. He had chosen to forget about me after the pity talk he had with me at the coffee shop. That only meant he really was a jerk. Was he the type to be all talk but no walk? Or did he truly have five girls a night calling him to tell him good night, and then forgetting their names once he hung up? I rolled my eyes. At least I wasn't caught up in-
"I hope your mother gets better, Paradise."
My feet stopped just as the nurse, now known as Shirley, was about to turn down the hallway to lead me to my mother. I swallowed nervously before turning around. Letting our eyes collide once more for a long moment. How did he remember my name? Wasn't he supposed to be the jerk here? My breathing quickened before looking back down at the floor. I begrudgingly felt a pleasurable shiver deep in my core at his voice. Was his voice so soft before?
"Let's hopes so."
I said just as softly as he had, though my voice tended to be always soft. Nothing special. Nothing like his. My cheeks burned as I refused to let my eyes connect with his again. The last thing I needed was a connection with this guy like moments before. The nurse seemed impatient on my taking my time. Finally, I turned my back fully on Conner and followed the nurse down the rest of the hallway and came to my mother's door without another glance at him. The nurse smiled and left me once she was sure this was my mother's room. I looked in the window, smiling to myself at not seeing my sister nor my father there.
My cold fingers wrapped around the door knob, everything in me wanting to run back to Conner and ask how he knew my mother was ill. I turned my head in the direction I came but I was too far down the hallway to see him. I didn't like the way he made me feel. Self conscious, like my father. But it was a different feeling at the same time. I swallowed, shaking the thoughts from my mind, before twisting the knob and going in.
