"Oh man." Kirsty looked at Paige, her eyes wide with fear. "I'm - I - I gotta go."
Kirsty shoved the chair back so hard that it clattered against the ground, and turned and ran from the hall. Her heart pounding, she ran to the restrooms.
Slamming her hands flat down on the bench, she stared at her reflection. Bright eyes, fevered with terror and shock. Long, messy auburn hair down to waist. Pale, clear skin. She frowned - was it just her imagination or were her eyes aquiring a slight violet hue, and her hair darkening, and her face becoming more angular? Shuddering, she buried her face in her hands for a second before dumping Kasey's jacket and, after a short pause, lowering the collar of her shirt to expose the skin behind her shoulderblades.
She stifled a scream as she saw the feathery nobs erupt, writhing and twisting. Horrified, she leant over and threw up in the sink. Then Kirsty looked again - wings, wings of tawny gold like a hawk's were sprouting from her back. After a few seconds, they stopped. Their entire length was about two and a half wide, narrow and shaped for speed.
With a gasped, she gingerly stretched them out. They responded, and she shouted in fright. Then, curiously almost, she pulled a long, golden feather out of her left wing - and winced as a bead of blood slid down her feathers and plopped onto the floor. Dropping the feather, she ran.
Bursting from the bathroom, she spread her wings and leapt. Gritting her teeth, she beat her wings harder and flew unsteadily away, toward the surrounding forest. She crash-landed in a tree, and slid down to the base of the tree, crying uncontrollably.
"What's happening?" she gasped.
Alec stared as Kirsty ran off. "Paige? Explanation?" he asked in a low voice as he also stood up. "Is it something to do with what happened in the chapel?"
