The Doctor, after doing mysterious rummagings in the deeper sections of his beloved spaceship, was just striding through the control room and tucking his screwdriver into his jacket interior before he stopped. He briefly scanned his company - Shade's peculiar kin, and the religious swearing man accompanied by the small child - before he realized that three were missing. Intrigued and a little surprised, he glided through the crowd with great strides. He positively bounced. Had the Tardis been run on optimism, the lights would have been glaring harder than the spotlights at a rugby game and blinding everybody.
"C'mon, you lot!" he called cheerfully with pretend impatience, leaning out of the doorway and casting a shadow over the square of golden light that poured out of the Tardis. "You're a mighty bad holdup-"
He stopped again. Something was dreadfully wrong, and this realization snatched the grin from his face. Vash looked out of breath and dustier than ever. Shade seemed unsettled. Or maybe panicky, judging by the wild hopping she was making on one leg and staring at the Time Lord with flattened ears.
"Knives..." she squeaked, pointing into the darkness with a quivering finger. "He... he took Ces..."
"Where?" the Doctor demanded, and flew down. Shade then began a wild rambling accompanied by anxious flailing as she tried to make clear the sudden disappearance of the Haran, but the Time Lord dropped down to examine a few shards of metal that lay scattered about the sand. A few smears of goo also betrayed the previous presence of the krifnur. He whipped out his sonic screwdriver, letting is buzz loudly over the leaf-fragile debris. He shoved it away again, a concern in his eyes as he picked up the dart and examined it with intense ex
pression. This time, however, the Time Lord looked close to angry.
"Was there an insect inside?" he questioned. "A grub or something?"
"Yeh, this weird icky thing that wriggled itself down Ces' throat," Shade queaked. "She started going all shaky. Then Knives turned up and walked off with her."
"She was paralysed," the Doctor said furiously. "It's a sick kind of organism the Harans began to breed and put into metal cases that they'd fly to enemies and either kill or render them helpless for kidnapping. The dart paralyses the body, and the toxins the grub injects once inside the victim's throat is a chemical that puts a kind of internal barrier between mental personalities - in this case, Ces and her Spectre. She won't be able to shapeshift or even talk to her wolf. Something seems very wrong if suddenly she's been abducted by her own kind, in the way they'd treat opponents in wars... Things weren't always too good relationship-wise between the two greatest nations on Theslern. Ces must have been on an opposing side to whoever's been following us these past few days. But even more worrying still... is why your brother was helping them." He stood, and looked around to face Vash. He was back into tactical mode, but with an added ruthlessness. "Where were they headed?"
