"It's my job," Jay answered, and his gaze fell down to her injured hand, which he promptly took hold of. "Apparently I didn't do a good enough job," he added quietly, in a soft, hushed voice that made it seem as they were whispering secrets to each other. But, they weren't. They probably should've exchanged secrets long ago, before they were engaged and all that, when they should've been learning about each other.

But, they weren't. Too caught up with the troubles Jay had, and often created himself, they were. What with Kurt, jealous Kurt, and the things they'd done together that both of them wanted to do, whether it was stealing a kiss from one another or stealing random things from a store for the freakin' thrill of it. He'd been a bad boyfriend, and now he was a bad fiancé. But, hopefully, he wouldn't be a bad husband. He'd try hard, he'd make sure that wasn't what he would be.

Now, they just had to get married. Then, he'd prove that he was a good lifelong partner. Nicole already thought he was, apparently, and for some odd reason. But, Jay knew what he really was, what people would think of him. He wanted to change all of that, and he would.

Nicole didn't reply for a moment, she was too cought up in her thoughts. When she did snap back to reality, though, she sighed. "That was my fault. You cant protect me from myself." She looked down at her hand, too, and bit her lip. Where was the pain, anyway?

He sighed, and shook his head slightly. "Maybe not in every way," Jay murmured, taking the cloth around Nicole's hand and tightening it. "but, at the very least, I should have been here to stop you. And I wasn't." He raised his gaze then, peeling it away from an injured hand to look into the eyes of whom the hand belonged to.

"We...should take you to the hospital," Jay said, his voice raising as he spoke. "This isn't just gonna heal over like a paper cut. This is a gash." As he spoke, he waved Nicole's hand around by the wrist, as if doing so would prove his point. "Get whatever you need -- insurance cards and whatnot, if you have them -- and then we'll go."

"I don't know where my mom keeps them," Nicole said, and she sighed. "I should probably check on my brother." She stepped back, the first time since she cut herself she was more than a foot away from Jay, and that was kind of unnerving. Her brother was pissed, and, sad and sick as it was, Jay was her only protection from him. She walked back to where he was sitting on the couch, clutching his arm. She wasn't going to apoligize, so she just walked over, frowning at him. She grinned as she spoke, though. "You shouldn't have mentioned Kurt," Nicole frowned when she continued, because it was more of a realization to her then a lesson to him. "He means more to Jay than I do."

She paused, reaching out to touch his arm; it was swelling and turning a sick purple-ish color. She didn't say anything else before she turned back to walk to the kitchen, looking over at Jay. "I have to get dressed before we go," She said, her voice flat and even. Her mood changed now that she knew what she said was true. Of couse it hurt, but she had just fought with Jay the day before so she didn't want to start another one, so she didn't mention it to Jay.

Jay almost settled down, but then he got all riled up again, as if he were a bird; just as their feathers begin to set, they puff up again, about ready to rip a person's eyes out. Why couldn't people just shut up about Kurt? Why was he always mentioned? Why did he always look like a bad guy for loving someone? He couldn't help it. Besides, it wasn't always a romantic sort of love. He cared for him like a brother -- no, something more than that. People loved people like that!

Just as Nicole returned, Jay clipped off the end of her sentence, snapping, "Why do you think Kurt means more to me than you?" Since when was it wrong to love your friends? to care for them? to want them to stay alive? he thought angrily. Oliver thought his actions were cruel; Hayden thought that he should "follow his heart"; Gage thought that he should respect his relationships, and treat people in them the way they should be, whether the relationship was friendly or romantic.

How come no one ever listens to Gage!?

Nicole rolled her eyes, and without missing a beat she snapped back. "Don't start right now, Jay. I'd like to go one day without fighting with you," Nicole didn't mean to snap at Jay, but she didn't feel bad.

How did they go from necking to fighting again in less than three minuites? She hated fighting with Jay, but they fought so often that all it seemed like was an excitment in their relationship anymore, not something that would tear them apart.

Jay flinched. It always seemed like they were on the verge of fighting, that much was true. He gave a slight nod, and took Nicole's uninjured hand. "Let's just go to the hospital, then," he said in a small voice. He'd take her to the one further away; after all, she wouldn't die from her wound. So, it would be okay if he avoided the hospital Kurt died in and went to a different one, right?

Nicole sighed a sigh of relief, but she was uneasy. If he had dropped it that easy, he hadn't dropped it. He'd just put it off for a while. She squeazed nightly on his hand, and biting down on her lip when a sharp pain shot through her arm. Oh, there's the pain. She grimaced in her head, but her face was blank on the outside. "Alright." She agreed plainly. There wasn't much to say.

Pulling Nicole out the door, Jay noticed her flinch but decided not to react to it. He'd just pretend he didn't notice; he'd pretend, and that would save him -- the both of them, actually -- from another fight. He'd pretend he'd quit on how Nicole thought Kurt meant more to him than her, he'd pretend he was angry about it. There was a lot of things he'd have to pretend he was to keep from being in a fight, but they were worth it, weren't they?

He'd already turned off the ignition; now they were just sitting in his car, in the driveway. "It's all right," Jay said calmly, his tensed body relaxing in the breath he'd let out a few words in. "It's okay. I'm okay, and now," He looked at Nicole, then her hand, then dragged his gaze back up to her face. "so are you. We're both okay. That's what matters." What mattered to him was that Nicole had been bleeding; bleeding bad. How many times had he seen that in his life? He'd prefer not to recall any of it.

Nicole stared at his eyes for a minuite before she looked back down at her hand. "It still hurts like hell," she said, adding a light chuckle so it wouldn't sound as bad as it felt. Now that it had stitches, it felli like it was pulling, and that was why it hurt. "But, you're right. I'll be fine, you're fine, we're fine." She trailed off a bit at the end, still not looking away from her hand. She didn't want to sit there anymore, but she wouldn't be the one to suggest the leave his car and go into his house.

Jay sighed, nodding a little. Yes. They were fine, so there was nothing to worry about anymore. Hopefully soon, Nicole would be dressed in a pretty white gown and he'd be in a suit, and then they'd get married and all that great stuff. It would be...great.

"Why don't you go on inside?" Jay said, turning around in his seat and reaching for something behind it. "I'll be there in a sec. Just gotta look for something," He looked at Nicole through the corner of his eye, still bent over awkwardly and reaching forward. "Alright?"

Nicole frowned for a moment, before she finally said "Okay.". She kissed him on the cheek before she opened the door and stepped out of his car, closing the door behind her quietly. She padded up to his door without saying anything, although she normally mumbled to herself about him. She looked back over hse shoulder before she opened the door, stepping in and closing the door behind her. She felt awkward just walking in, but she was told to.
