Nicole furrowed her brow at Gage, that wasn't at all what she expected to say. "Come on, Gage, you don't have to be like that. You can still talk to them, if you try.. I don't mind forgetting about them, but you can't, you guys were all so close." Nicole knew there was probably no way of convincing Gage to do what he didn't want to do, but there was no harm in trying, she supposed.
"Never mind me trying to forget Jay, but he's still around. Why don't you try calling him? I know he misses you.."

Gage stared up at Nicole with wide, wet eyes. Something about all of this was insane. "No, I should really, really get over them." He wiped his eyes, looking down at his slip-ons. His eyes wandered for a moment, moving to the grey cement beneath him. "Uh-uhmm...?" The ground was beginning to spot, but he couldn't be sure whether or not if he was crying or not.
Slowly, he raised his head. "Just my luck," he said softly, staring up at the darkening clouds. "It's starting to rain. Here, I... I don't..." Gage slipped off his sweater. Nicole had a small frame, maybe small enough to fit in his jacket. "Take this. Before you really get soaked." He held it out to her.

"No, Gage, you don't have to..." Nicole replied, taking the sweater anyway. If she had learned anything, it's there's no point in arguing with anyone. Just do what they ask of you, and there's no problem. "Thank you." She said, slipping it on. She felt really bad. Nicole had ignored this boy for months, almost a year. Never acknowledged him, but now that Jay was done with her... she turned to Gage, and he hadn't argued, just done what she wanted. Is that how it's supposed to be? "Do you want to..?" Nicole started, looking at the sky. She loved rain. Every girl has wanted to dance in the rain, kiss in the rain, play in the rain. "Do you want to go to my house, or..? It's going to rain."

He could tell Nicole was about to argue, and he was quick to think of a counter argument. "Gage, I can't take this." "No! Please, do, it wouldn't be very gentlemanly of me to leave you to get wet." Yeah, would be nice. Maybe he'd seem a lot manlier if he did that kind of thing. "Sure, absolutely," answered Gage, blinking. "Yellow looks nice on you, Nicole. It compliments your hair...and your complexion..."
More raindrops. Just a moment ago, there had only been a few drops. Now it was really starting rain. "Okay, your house," Gage said, taking Nicole's hand. He felt like Jay...or Kurt... They always took charge of any situation, or at least one of his other friends would. "Come on. I'm pretty sure I know where it's at, Oliver told me once." He started walking her back to her home.

As Gage was walking, Nicole found it incredibly difficult to keep up with his pace. Maybe all those years of running from angry librarians and police officers had an effect on the whole group. She was never able to keep up with Jay comfortably, either. "I feel bad." she started. As they go closer to her house, the rain was falling harder, making Nicole's hair damper and became increasingly louder as it hit the earth.
"I only called you when I needed your help. I never tried calling just to say hi. You're the only one who seemed to like me and I've been a *censored*ty friend. I haven't been a friend at all. I don't even know if you consider me one. Just know if you ever need a friend, I'll be here for you. Just like you're for me." Nicole smiled. A genuine smile, and it felt good, looking down at Gage.
Then, she laughed. "This is nice. It's been so long since I've walked in the rain. It's fun. I wonder if Jay's having fun."

"Oh, please, don't feel bad," Gage shook his head. He didn't mind this. He didn't mind how Nicole's call was a one in a million thing, so rare that he was appalled when Nicole actually called him. It didn't matter, the fact that she had only called him for support. Gage was good at supporting, so that was what he would do for Nicole.
He looked up at Nicole. "I'm telling you," Gage began with a frown. "nobody disliked you in our group of friends. I'm sorry if you ever bickered with any of them, particularly Kurt, but nobody disliked you." Just like Jay would, he was getting all bristly while he tried to defend his friends. "Jay especially didn't dislike you..." He sighed.
One day, Kurt had asked him if he should give up on Jay. Gage had encouraged him to pursue the other, and Kurt, taking the other's encouragement in full confidence, proceeded to do so. Within a week, Jay and Kurt were back as a happy couple...and then suddenly, they were just friends. But, Kurt never gave up. He was always trying to be something more for Jay, and maybe, if Gage hadn't told him to keep after Jay, then...maybe, Kurt would still be alive.
"Rain is wonderful," Gage agreed finally. They had finally reached Nicole's house. It was a cute house, but Gage could have sworn that he'd seen someone inside. It kind of frightened him. "Let's go inside," he added, smiling back up at Nicole. He paid no mind to Nicole's ponderings, mostly because they had to do with Jay.
