Kneeling by the lake Tokala dipped her nut brown hands into the inviting, cool water, lifting them out slowly to watch the droplets drip off her skin. Dark green eyes dulled with sadness sat under heavy black lashes, flicking from side to side quickly. First to her hands, then to the opposite shore of the lake, where the white men lay.
‘Wasicu,’ she spat out angrily, wiping her hands swiftly on her deer-hide tunic. A spiral of smoke drifting gently upwards betrayed their camp, and the bitter teen rose to her feet with an ex
pression of anger marring her pretty face.
Sending a few pebbles flying with her angry footsteps, Tokala padded over to the forest edge, fingering the bone knife that sat within its sheath, hanging from her wampum belt. Patterned with white whelk shells this was her most precious possession, even before her bow.
She drifted into the forest, fading from view as if like a woodlands spirit.
---A few hours later---
A stinging sensation, that was all it was, when Tokala first awoke. Blinking her eyes slowly she turned her head stiffly, aware of the wet feeling of blood on her neck and head. 'Wasicu,' she muttered again, though now the tone of her voice was more of confusion than anger.
Lifting on hand to her head she was relieved to find it was not herself that had been injured, but could barely stiffle a gasp of shock when she felt cold flesh behind her, also soaked in a crimson liquid.
Staggering to her feet the willowly teen turned her body to face what she had been resting on. It was her uncle Akecheta, a warrior of her tribe.
'No,' she whispered in disbelief, bending her knees to touch his face gently. Lifting her eyes she gazed around the camp only to find death and blood everywhere. And white men.
Giving them a frightened look she turned to flee into the forest when a shout stopped her. 'Hey!' it called in english, a foreign language to Tokala. 'Stop there!'
'Wasicu, wasicu,' she hissed under her breath as she plunged into the underbush, followed by the rining shots of a gun.
Suddenly, Tokala could feel herself stumbling, and falling, falling, falling...
[She's a fox now. xD]
