There was a noise within the woods and Cassandra perked up, interest piqued. These days she couldn't seem to help but be distracted by everything that went on around her. Wondering if powers could develop on their own without a kill Cassandra rubbed her hands together before deliberating on a decision.
Follow the noise and lay her mind to rest. Curiosity burned in her veins and Cassandra was itching for something to happen. Even a battle, if it came to that.
Or she could stay, settle down, wait until whatever it was had passed and then get going again when the sun came up.
Ignoring the small voice in her head that told her it was a bad idea (Cassandra had yet to figure out if it came with being a clairvoyant, the crazy part) she padded up the beach. The sand squeezed gently underneath her tattered running shoes, lending her a springy step completely out of character. Every now and then mini-dunes would shift, sending the gawky girl tumbling forwards. Each time she would catch herself and shake gently for a moment before continuing.
Hurrying in that fashion she finally made it to the edge of the forest. Some time back the sand had turned to loose dirt, then scratchy grasslands. Eventually those had died away into scruffy turf that disappeared into the quickly approaching weald. Somehow this had happened within a hundred meters or so. Questioning the nature of the land around her Cassandra approached the woods.
With a bit of doubt to her step Cassandra slipped between the tall tree trunks, hands trailing across the rough bark. Twigs snapped and leaves rustled as she neared the source of the noise. Fixing the destination in mind she paused a dozen feet away, knowing that she'd done little to hide her presence.
Then, about to speak, Cassandra had the misfortunate to be beset upon by another vision.
Whimpering cries and a frail body echoed sharply before twisting away, fleeing on silver wings. Darkened tendrils flashed into a brazen white, twisting and coiling into a thick braid that streamed down a delicate back. Pinpoints of ice glared from the darkness as the elusive woman fled on dancing feet, taking the light with her.
She was plunged into darkness as those glittering orbs blinked out, petals of blood and crimson fluttering down from somewhere above or below. They whirled around before twisting into the vague shape of a woman. Then, with little warning, they fell to the ground in graceful swoops. Touching the ground they kindled into tiny glowing flames that smoked gently. The smoke burned and wheeled upwards, taking Cassandra's mind with it.
Cass blinked and let out a groan, tears squeezing out of her eyes as she plastered a hand to her face. The day was just getting worse and worse and she honestly didn't know if her recent divining had anything to do with that noise.
In fact, what the heck had the noise been to begin with?
