Alexandra stepped out of the door of her house and closed it behind her. Locking the door and taking the gold key out with a click, she brushed her bangs out of her eyes and straigtened her shirt that had been riding at an uncomfortable angle above her jeans. Fiddling with a claw on her necklace, she smiled as two of the village's young children scampered past. Alex scuffed her tennis shoe in the dirt, unsure of what to do. Now she was an adult, she-well, let's just say it was confusing. All these kids looking up to her, and soon she would be stuck looking after them the entire day while other, older women got to do their cool jobs, whatever they happened to be.
The sky was gray and cloudy, with shafts of sunlight reaching through the clouds. Stray dogs and ragged-looking cats lay splayed out on these small spots, and growled if anyone happened to stumble by them and get too close. Life was just as it had always been. Yet-it was different somehow. Alex couldn't quite put her finger on it.

((Gah. Will post for other charries later.))
Vynzanaiahkren sat on the mossy ground beneath a tree. The soft earth, damp from a recent rainfall, was blanketed in shadows provided by the enormous branches and small, pointed leaves of the tree. This tree- he hated that he had no proper name for it, being unfamiliar with the local plant life as he was- was located just beyond the borders of the tiny village that the People had created for themselves. Vyn would usually never wander this far from the others of his kind, but he felt that he needed to be alone and to relax for once. Despite his best efforts to relax, Vyn could not help but fidget and cast his large brown eyes around nervously. He clenched and unclenched the long, bony fingers of his hands, really just for something to do. Suddenly, Vyn tensed (if he could, in fact, become any more tense than he already was).
"H-hello?" he stammered, but the noise he had uttered with his small mouth would have sounded like mere clicks to a human. Just meaningless clicks that could just as easily be mistaken for the snapping of a branch, or the angry chattering of a squirrel.
A peal of laughter sounded from the bushes, and Vyn relaxed somewhat. "Phyx," he said, relief evident in his voice as he recognized her thin form emerging from the bushes.
"I wish you wouldn't sneak up like that," Vyn said, trying to sound angry but then immediately breaking into a sharp-toothed grin. "Any news?" he asked, his ex pression changing quickly as he tilted his head to the side quizzically.
"If you speak of the Young Ones," Phyxaionn said, choosing her words carefully, "then I am afraid not. They have not yet regained consciousness."
Vyn let out a shaky breath that he hadn't even been aware he was holding in. "I… I'm almost glad." he said, looking meek. "I mean, it's all just so…"
"I know," Phyx said gently. "I feel the same way."
The two remained in amiable silence for almost a minute, before Vyn stood up. "We should probably go back before the others start to worry," he said, starting towards the village of his People. He paused to see if his friend was following (she was, and was taking long, graceful steps) before he continued walking. When they returned, Phyx walked off to go do who knows what, while Vyn proceeded to stand around awkwardly and starting at the slightest of noises.

Glym stirred in her sleep, feeling cold… so cold. She was never this cold in her bed, not with all those thick warm wool blankets she had. Her china blue eyes fluttered open, and she tried, unsuccessfully, to stifle a gasp at what she saw.
She was in a room, on the ground on top of a bed of… were those leaves? And there was another figure in the room (if it could even be called that, it was so crude) with her, still unconscious *cough*It'soneofTy'schilduns.Youpickwhichone*. She could not tell if it was male or female, since his/her back was turned, but he/she was most likely a little older than Glym, given their height. Or, at least, that was Glym's guess. She had no idea what was happening, and she felt panic begin to rise in her. "W-what?" she managed to stammer.

((Er. These guys'll have to do for now. Will continue to post for mah other charries))
Krael lay in his bed, the covers in a crumpled heap on the floor, having been kicked off by Krael at some point during the night. He willed himself to fall back into the deep sleep he had been in just moments before, but he had no success in the matter. He scowled at the bright sunlight that seeped through the blinds, closed though they were, and stood up. He stalked towards the front door, exited through it, then slammed it behind him with far more force than was necessary. Krael stumbled down the front steps, now wide awake, and began to wander around the village.
~~~
James sat perched upon one of the steps in front of his house, nose buried deep within the pages of a book. He turned the page, enjoying the feeling of the cool, smooth paper between his fingers.
He was content, but not completely happy. James, strangely enough, had been happy just moments before, prior to his parents kicking him out of the house, claiming that he needed to 'go outside and make some friends, for God's sakes.'
And so, there James sat, completely absorbed in his book, and perfectly happy to not make any attempt whatsoever at initiating human contact. His book was the only companion he required at present, and he was determined for it to remain that way.
Alex noticed James, a village boy around 13. He seemed to be fully engrossed in his book, so she just sat and watched the birds flutter around the rooftops. Their shrill chirps hung in the air like Christmas ornaments for one second more... Alex tensed as the bird's song ended abruptly. The birds either landed, standing stiffly, or flew away with the wind ruffling their feathers. She hadn't heard anything, but apparently the birds could sense something was wrong. Alex tried to shrug it off, but she kept remembering something her grandmother had once told her: "Trust the birds." At that point Alexandra started believing that her grandmother's mind was a little messed up from old age. But now she wasn't so sure. She thought she heard a branch crack behind her, but she couldn't tell, because the birds chose that moment to start screaming their lungs out again. Alex sighed.
Damien had been walking through the village, when he was rudely interrupted by the hysterical screaming and crying of an obviously very distressed woman.
"Glym!" she screeched. "Glyyyymm!"
"Woah," Damien said, as the woman stumbled up to him.
"Have you seen her? Have you seen her?!" the woman asked with huge eyes, barely able to form a coherent sentence in between sobs.
"Huh?" Damien said. "Uh, sorry lady. What does your kid look like again?"
The woman glared at Damien. "She's not 'my kid'!" she screeched. "I'm her aunt, and I was supposed to be taking care of her but then she must have wandered off and now she's gone!" she wailed.
Damien blinked. "Um..." he stammered. "I'm sure she'll turn up. It's not like it's a very big town. All that's beyond it is the fore-"
"I bloody well know what's beyond this town! I need to get Glym back before her mother finds out. Will you help me?" The woman looked so pathetic with tears streaming down her face as she wrung the material of her shirt in her hands, Damien couldn't help but feel sorry for her.
"Er, yeah, I guess." he muttered, suddenly regretting even getting out of bed this morning.
Alex got up. She had made up her mind to find out what was going on this morning. Just to emphasize her thoughts, she heard the cries of a woman farther down the street. Again, Alex thought she heard a branch crack behind her. She thought of a lost child, gone missing, according to today's newspaper.
Alex turned and walked straight towards the forest behind her house. When she got to the edge, fear swept over her. She peered around a tree and caught a glimpse of white fur, and footsteps. She thought of running away and screaming like that woman, but something made her take a few steps farther. Around a few more trees, Alex got a glance at a crude white figure before her. Holding back a screech of terror, she bolted back out of the forest as fast as the bird's song accelerated.
