Red

Whirl Islands, Johto

“I think you’re fine right here, Aero.” The once-fossilized beast above him released a great roar that was soon carried away by the wind. The sixteen-year-old held onto his Aerodactyl’s legs tightly as the decent was anything but smooth. No one in Red’s team could blame the creature, however. They needed to fly extremely close to the jet stream in order not to be spotted by those idiotic Red-dogs. (The change in wind speed was hard to navigate, especially if you were a mere Pokémon and not an airplane.)

At the beginning of the government’s tyranny, Red refused to condone any of the laws. After seeing what happened to his friends and their Pokémon, he swallowed his pride and fled from his home region of Kanto. It was hard to keep under the radar when you were famous for winning the ninth Kanto Pokémon League at eleven, though. The human’s eyebrows creased in worry as Aero crashed into the soft sand with him still hanging on.

Red coughed, sand flying out of his mouth. His chocolate-colored eyes softened as he heard Aero wheeze. “You did an awesome job, Aero. You’re due for a long, well-deserved rest.” One tanned hand reached around to his belt and plucked off Aero’s Pokéball.

“Pikapi!” A little yellow mouse stuck his head out of Red’s backpack. The head was soon followed by paws holding a green spray bottle. His trainer smiled and opened the backpack fully, allowing Pika to slip out and scurry to Aero’s side. Pika made quick work of the injured Fossil beast by spraying the chemical all over the Rock type. As soon as the tough breaths dissipated, Red returned Aero to his spot on the leather belt. Pika clambered up onto his shoulder, stubborn as ever.

He absolutely DETESTED his Pokéball. He’d hear Red beg or even die before he was put back into that thing. Pika’s ears twitched as he heard something behind a nearby rock. “Pikapi, pika pika!” The mouse waved a paw in the direction he heard the noise, a group of boulders near the entrance of Lugia’s cave. Only the Northeastern one would lead deep into the Legendary’s lair. They came here in the first place to speak to the great deity, and the mere thought of an End-dog already being here made Red’s blood boil.

With a nod to the partner on his shoulder, Red sprinted toward the hidden area. He was prepared for anything. At least, he thought so.

Akilina

Somewhere near Route 46, Jhoto

Hiding behind a tree, a small 17 year old let out a pokemon. The pokemon hissed as it emerged, angry that it had been cooped up for so long. Akilina, or Aki, as she was called, ran to the luxray's side. Rel glared at her for a moment and then his gaze softened, understanding why this had been so. Aki smiled and hugged his sparking neck.

A shock ran up her spine and it was her turn to glare at Rel. "Hey...." She said, staring at him through narrowed eyes. Hey yourself, It wasn't my fault. His moody eyes seemed to say. She sighed and sat down on his broad back. "Yes, Rel... I know." She said, as if she could understand his language.

A pokeball hidden in her pocket shook and she smiled, instantly knowing who it was. She pressed the button and out toppled a shiny umbreon. The purple eyes of Feyth gazed at her kindly. "Umbre..." She said quietly, sitting down on her haunches.

Aki looked from Luxray to Umbreon and back again. "I*m sorry I had you both in there for so long." She was mostly adressing Rel, for Feyth didn't care as much and most of the time she shrugged it off. Feyth looked around, watching for others, and then looked at the ground again. Rel's shoulders settled and his fur flattened on his back. A smile crept across his maw and she nodded in forgiveness, wondering if they would run into any other freelancers...

Whirl Islands Johto

Despite my mild shivering, I was starting to fall into a sleep when a dull thud grabbed me from relaxation. I jolted up, wondering what in the name of Arceus that was. Ashe noticed it as well and became cautious, hiding the cyan glow of her flame under her wing. I slowly got up, hoping that I was wrong about an End-Dog search party.

"I had to freakin' jinx it..." I muttered to myself, almost silently.

I kept a steady stance, quickly returning Ashe to her Pokeball. If it was an End-dog, making a get away on my Charizard was near suicide. Her bright flaming tail, though a sign of her prowess, was a beacon to our location, even in thick clouds. I wasn't apt for swimming again, I was still cold from before, so my other option was my Dragonite. They could fly around the world in 18 hours according to the 'Dex, and mine I trained to make sure of that fact. I received her as a Dratini from the Dragon's Den back home, and I was never one to disappoint the elders.

I pushed the button on the other Pokeball, and a orangish brown dragon popped out and yawned. I made a quieting motion to Bryn, who nodded and waited behind a tall slab of stone, out of sight. I waited myself, nearing a rock closer to the rhythmic waves. We heard footsteps, coming closer and closer. I waited patiently, until then came what made the noise.

A teenage boy around my age, red outfit, ball cap, and a Pikachu on his shoulder. It was dark so I couldn't make out much more than that. Bryn was behind me, and no doubt she was now in plain view. It wasn't hard to notice a Dragonite five feet away from you. They didn't look like an End-Dog, but they were getting sneaky these days. If this was a Freelancer like me...well that was just sheer dumb luck.

I quickly stepped out next to my Dragonite and looked acccusingly at the guy, asking the only question a Freelancer would know the answer to in a firm and serious voice:

"Mark?"

Koko Rene
Somewhere along Route 46, Johto

Koko was still pacing around, trying to figure out what to do, with Teva pacing a path perpendicular to her's. They didn't run into each other somehow, probably due to the length of the path and the pace at which they each walked. However, Teva suddenly stopped, facing the door. Koko, not paying attention, ran into her, nearly falling in a flip over her. She glanced at Teva, nudging the Ninetails with her knee. Getting no response, she bent down and looked in the direction Teva was. Maybe she saw something on the door. But Koko saw nothing. Sighing, she opened the door a bit, to see if maybe she'd heard something, and Teva, taking the chance, slipped through the gap, and sprinted outside. Koko, shocked at Teva's behavior, followed at as fast a pace as she could, but still couldn't catch up to the nine-tailed Pokemon.

Koko caught up with Teva about twenty feet from her house, and only because the Ninetails had stopped to wait. It seemed as if whatever had caught her attention was now gone. However, Koko heard the telltale sound of a voice nearby, and obviously, Teva did too, as she perked up, her ears as pricked as they could get, her attention directed toward a stand of trees not too far from where they stood now. The Ninetails started walking toward the trees, her trainer right beside her.

As they approached the trees, she saw a girl, along with a Luxray and a shiny Umbreon. Teva sat down about 4 feet from them, her tails splayed around her on the ground. Koko stopped beside her, and took in the scene. It was possible it was an End-Dog, but why would they be in the trees with their Pokemon? Taking the risk, she asked a single-worded question with genuine curiosity.

"Mark?"

Beside her, the Ninetails seemed to copy her curiosity.

"Nine?"

Whatever was behind those rocks seemed to hear them. Pika’s cheeks began to spark as a result, and Red’s left hand formed a tight fist. Their hostility was forgotten when they saw the girl, nevertheless. She definitely wasn’t dressed as sophisticatedly as some of the End-dogs he had to dispose of, before. The female didn’t look like she could kill, either; her hoodie and hands stuffed into her pockets indicated that she was dressed for comfort as opposed to stealth.

The Dragonite standing vigil behind her was another clue to what kind of person she was. Its protective stance would not be given to someone it was not familiar with. So perhaps this Dragon-type was not stolen. With those facts sitting in his mind, Red crossed his arms. They’d feign ignorance for now, before they pried out more information. Looks were deceiving, and Red knew for a fact that some of the End-dogs would do anything to get what they wanted. The sixteen-year-old relaxed his grip just slightly, and Pika’s sparks lessened. The rodent’s beady black eyes remained narrowed at the newcomer.

“Lugia,” Red spoke curtly. That was the greeting that only Freelancers were supposed to know. Perhaps Arceus and the other deities were smiling down upon him and his party. “I’ll keep it short and simple. What are you doing here? The Whirl Islands aren’t for any normal trainer.” Pika chirped in, appearing to be speaking to the Dragonite. He wanted to know where the other’s loyalties remained.

“Are you seeking the great Trio Master for your own gain? Are you merely curious about its existence?”

"Mew." Aki turned and looked at the other trainer, turning to look at her. "Mark?" She did a facepalm because obviously, if the girl was an end-dog, she wouldn't have said mark. She sighed and returned Feyth to her pokeball. "This is Rel-" She was cut off by a growling noise from the luxray beside her.

Rel's pelt was electrified with sparks dancing over it. His lips were curled to show pointy teeth, rows of them. His mouse like ears were layed back on his head, his fur was standing on end, and his hackles rose. "Calm Rel." Aki said sharply, turning on him with narrowed eyes. He growled back at her and she folded her arms, showing him that he wasn't backing down.

"Why are you here?" Akilina asked, returning the idiotic luxray to his pokeball. "I*m sorry about Rel... He can get a bit... Well, he hasn't had a battle in a while." She sighed defeated and stared at the other freelancer, awaiting an answer...

Patrick Shaye

Lake of Rage, Johto

Patrick looked up in the sky as everyone was now stretching besides Archie who was on his lap. Archie was close to falling asleep but his ears twitched, waking him up and looking around. His shivering had went away and he snuggled more in the scarf and got comfy again. Sighing, Patrick continued to look at the sky and smiled at the times he would watch his dad train his sky pokemon and teach the new ones to fly.

"Dad.. Only if you stayed alive long enough to see what a disaster this world has began to sink in..."

Archie looked at Patrick and meowed quietly. He noticed the sound and quickly looked down, petting the pink skitty on the head. He purred and put his head back down. He watched as his pokemon walked some towards him. Buster layed down and Damien made himself comfy in the tree on his back. But Buster didn't mind and layed his big head down.

Randy sat beside the bigger gra.ss type and closed his eyes. He was tuning everything out now, or so thought by Patrick. Dayleen made herself comfy beside Patrick and Archie. She nuzzled at Patrick's neck and he put his hand on her nose," Hey hey I love you too Day~" She looked at him and then put her head down. Everyone was so quiet and tired.

" You guys know I'm heading to a town sooner or later so everyone's going back in the poke balls? Sorry but its the law, I don't wanna cause trouble.." They looked at him curiously and , to him, sad. He knew they hated it in their poke balls but he had no choice. He didn't want to get in any kind of trouble. He made a promise to all them that'd he always stay with them and not get into trouble that might cause them to seperate.

‘Lugia’

Alright so this wasn’t an End-Dog...that’s good, that means I can just leisurely fly away.

I just stood there with a disconcerned look on my face...though I was told I always looked serious, unimpressed or just plain annoyed. The Pikachu didn’t bother me, I had a towering Dragonite to back me up, even if she was a pacifist. The other boy however-yes I was calling him a boy-seemed to be analyzing my very stature. That wasn’t something you saw in the average person. Bryn waved at the Pikachu, showing her less intimidating side. The wind blew and made me shudder, luckily the stranger couldn’t tell under my heavier, damp sweater. Bryn however noticed and put a claw on my shoulder. I shrugged it off.

I was going to walk off and be anti-social when I had questions bombarded at me. He was going to keep it short and simple? I could make it even shorter by taking one leap onto my Dragonite and head right for Olivine. However at that speed, that just risk a chance of hypothermia, then dear Arceus the lecture I would get from Bryn.

“Well first, in your order of questioning...I swam here after being caught as a stowaway on a freighter to Olivine by a small squad of End-dogs. By that you can no doubt determine that I am no normal trainer.” I started in a slightly sarcastic tone, even as it was all truth, I wasn’t keen on talking to random guys that fell out of the sky on a blue note.

I scoffed at the mention of ‘the Trio Master’. Seeking Lugia? Lugia was in some facility, rotting cold and powerless. The idea made my furious but I didn’t show it. I just answered the guys question, returning to my usual calm voice.

“I know Lugia exists, but Lugia has been long gone from these islands because of the government. Everyone who knows the truth these days knows that it’s a rare day in ‘paradise’ when the sea between Cinawood and Olivine is traversable. Without the guardian of the sea, or the ‘Trio Master’ as you call it, it’s been raging with only these islands to call safety, or the most advanced ships that were built for constant storms. However, it’s a slight calm right now.”

I stopped, wondering why I kept going on to some stranger I met just a few minutes ago. Even if he was a Freelancer, I didn’t care why he was here, or why he crashed onto the other side of the beach. I slumped down in the sand against a rock, wishing I could have a fire out without using Ashe.

“I’d ask you why you’re here but frankly I wouldn’t care.” I said, putting my head into my folded, damp arms. “That’s Bryn by the way.”

Koko Rene
Somewhere along Route 46, Johto

Koko relaxed somewhat as the question was answered, smiling a bit as it was asked again. Beside her, Teva snickered a bit. But the question was ignored and the shiny Umbreon returned to her Pokeball. But before much talking could get done, the Luxray beside her growled. Teva, becoming defensive, stood her ground, growling as well. When the electric-type was returned to the Pokeball, however, the Ninetails calmed down. Koko pat her head, smiling, as she listened to the girl. Upon asking why she was here, Teva snickered again, and started trotting back in the other direction, toward the house. Koko sighed and turned to follow her, looking back over her shoulder.
"I actually live not too far from here. You're welcome to follow if you like. I'm sure Teva wouldn't mind much. As for not having a battle...We might be able to fix that."
On that note, Koko ran to catch up with Teva, the Ninetails smiling. She had heard the last part and knew what Koko planned.

Akilina

Somewhere near Route 46, Jhoto

"I became jhoto champion you know, before everything happened." Aki said, glancing every now and then to the pokeball in her hand, deciding whether to let the pokemon in it out or not. She decided against it and stuck it back in her pocket, the only place for her to keep them. "It was fun, I tried to go through all the other gyms in the Kanto region, but before I could beat Blue, the pokemon started dissapearing."

Akilina gazed at the gil as she offered to let her stay at her house. Her eyes lit up at the battle sound. "That sounds... I don't know what to say!?" She cried enthusiasticaly. She clamped her hand over her mouth as a few pidgey shot out of the trees, scared from her voice. She waved them good-byem, sorry that she had frightened them...

Red

Whirl Islands

“I never said that you were any less,” Red continued. “Some people these days, *censored*uming that they’re either the best or the worst. Arceus gaze fondly upon my people skills.” He tugged down on his cap and rolled his eyes. A sudden gust of wind caused him to clamp down on his red and white accessory. Pika’s ears fluttered in the gale, but they did pick up the sound of droplets falling to the sand. Were those from the girl’s clothes?

She was going to get sick that way, especially if her story about swimming all the way here was true. Pika could see the concern written over Byrn’s face. He chirped another phrase to the dragon before diving headlong into Red’s backpack again. The male trainer narrowed his eyes, still hidden under the shadow of his cap. What in the world would his best buddy be doing?

While the mouse was pilfering through the various hidden pockets in his pack, Red turned his attention back to the seemingly older girl. Okay, so he was short and sixteen. At least he had muscle! But his height didn’t particularly help in the intimidation factor. This girl had probably never heard of him. A part of Red found that insulting, but the rational half thought it was probably for the best. The year he championed the Pokémon league was far in the past now thanks to those End-dogs.

Goodness was this girl dense. She couldn’t pick up the fact that he was here for his own reasons, and perhaps, unlike her, did not end up here accidentally. “Have you ever given a thought to why there are only few days in which there is ‘paradise’? Since Lugia’s gone, shouldn’t there be any at all? Go ahead and leave if you want. As for me, I’m gonna check out what’s left.” Without another word, he about-faced and headed toward the cavern’s entrance.

It was at this time that Pika conveniently stuck his head out again with a yellow berry in his mouth. He leapt out of Red’s bag, the trainer not even stopping. (He knew Pika would catch up in time.) The soft pattering of paws in the sand followed. The yellow mouse held up the berry to the wet female on his tip toes, motioning for her to eat it.
