I met him in fifth grade. He was loud, boisterous and obnoxious. All my friends told me that I shouldn’t fall in love with him, but I couldn’t resist. Kyoko was the uilus of my dreams.
His fur was a delicately beautiful shade of cream while mine was a dull brown. Sparkling emerald eyes and creamy feathers. He was perfect. And I? I looked like a piece of dirt.
Day after day, I followed him around like a sick puppy. The other girls flirted with him but I was always too shy to tell him how much I loved him. Sometimes, I would look up to find him staring at me, only to turn away in embarr***ment. It was as if he was ashamed to be seen with me. My heart was broken. Word got around that he was in love with some girl. That night, I cried for an hour before I could calm myself down.
The next morning, I woke up with circles around my eyes, matted feathers and a ho*** voice. Just great. I told my mom I didn’t want to go to school that day but she shoved me out the door.
“You can’t let boy trouble distract you from your studies!” she barked. I trudged to the bus stop miserably. The bus screeched to a stop just as I overheard some of the popular kids talking about Kyoko wanting to ask a girl out. I sighed in frustration. I wondered why I even bothered. Kyoko was obviously not gonna fall in love with someone like me. I not even brave enough to squish an ant.
As I forced my paws to carry me to math cl***, someone tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around, glaring only to have my heart drop to my paws when I saw that it was Kyoko. He flushed red and coughed.
“I…er…I was wondering if you’d like to go to the dance with me,” he stuttered. The dance! I had forgotten all about it.
I smiled. “Why yes, of course.” Kyoko grinned back and said,
“You know, I’ve always liked you since the minute I first saw you.”
We talked for what seemed like hours only to have the late bell interrupt us. I went to cl*** with a light heart that day. I’d like to say that was the start of a girlfriend-boyfriend relationship but it wasn’t. After two years, I fell for another uilus and Kyoko moved on.
The moral of this story? Never give up. Someday, you will get what you want if you work hard enough for it.
