Aeviki restrained herself from snarling as the knife hit her in the leg. The frightened human whimpered in fear and tried to escape, only to be cut off by a ring of other vampires, all laughing and baring their fangs at it. One stepped forward. "It drew blood," Aeviki said in a commanding voice, examining the shallow wound, which was almost fully-healed. "I claim it." The blood-claim was one of the few rites that the vampires followed. It stated that if a human drew a vampire's blood, the vampire had a rite to claim that human as its own. No other vampires could harm it, and the vampire was free to do what it wished with the human.
Aeviki was beginning to grow annoyed with the game. She grabbed the front of the human's shirt, hoisted it up, and sank her fangs into its neck. It whimpered in fear and began thrashing wildly. Aeviki grunted as the human shattered her left kneecap. Within moments the human's blood had healed what before would have taken several minutes to heal.
Aeviki tossed the carcas.s onto the stone floor, licking her lips to rid them of the blood. This mortal had contained an exceptionally large amount of blood, but her hunger was not sated yet. Her thoughts flickered back to Kasu, the girl she had Turned in the hospital a few nights before. Yesterday the bodies of the priest and people attending had been found, all drained of blood, when more people had come to bury the dead. "Let's go," she said to the coven, licking her lips in anticipation and turning her thoughts away from the fledgling. "I'm still hungry."
