It was a cold, stormy night, when Saber Milone left her home, the only one she'd ever and would ever know, and began what would be her new life. She sat on the window sill, admiring a view she'd never see again, hoping to see the moon one last time. Someone threw a pebble from below, and she knew her time was up, so she pushed off and jumped to the ground, a warm body catching her steadily.
"Be careful with stunts like that Saber." a voice rumbled from above her. "You could hurt yourself, then all this sneaking would be a waste." Saber in turn punched the person, who fell backwards and started running ahead along the snowy street. Two more forms appeared to greet them at the border of the city, and they welcomed her warmly. They led her into a small compartment of a train on its way out, and out of the way of prying eyes, two of them let their illusions drop, becoming able to walk on their hands and feet, and very furry.
"Victor, Leon," Saber whispered softly, "you shouldn't risk it, if someone sees you-"
"If someone sees them," answered the third of the companions, "they'll think they're just dogs."
"Gerard," said Saber scoldingly, "don't encourage them." Gerard chuckled and the two wolves snuggled closer to Saber and she gave in. These three, she thought, are my most trusted friends, no matter what we're going to be together. She leaned into Gerard, who stroked her hair fondly and they all fell asleep.
It was some time later, when the train jerked violently to the side, and about 100 pounds of wolf-flesh was on top of her, that Saber woke up. On reflex, Victor and Leon's illusions were back up and they got off of Saber, fangs bared at whatever was coming. The train jerked again to the other side, throwing them all into each other again. The train, being old as it was, could not take the force of the four of them slamming into the door, and it broke, all of them falling out into the snowbank. Saber shook herself off, as did the others, and they looked to see the train had already left them behind.
"Dang," yelled Leon, "what in Paradise' name was that?"
"Probably ice on the tracks, making it uneven and thus the over-movement of the fulcrum and...." Victor rambled on about something no one really cared about while the others began to follow the tracks. As soon as he realized they were leaving he ran after them and they all let their illusions drop, and taking on their appearances as wolves. Saber was the only false wolf among them, but they'd taken her in despite that knowledge and offered to bring her with them to paradise, as they were young and believed that as long as she had a pure soul that she'd be allowed in too. They reassured her time and again whenever she doubted herself and so when it had come time for them to leave they'd taken her along.
Together they were an odd bunch to say the least. Gerard acted as the big brother to all three of them, he was street-smart and cunning with a wit that'd put a fox to shame. Leon and Victor were polar opposites, Leon being compulsive and hot-headed, Victor being so cool it was icey and prone to lecturing at the most inconvenient moments possible. In their wolf formes, Gerard was the largest with tawny fur and a white underbelly. Leon was a dirty blonde with an extra tuft of hair on his head, and Victor was silver with a black splotch along his middle-back.
Saber was, their little sister, the one they all wanted to protect. Despite her fighting abilities, she was still a girl and they felt that meant she needed them to keep her safe. Her fur was quite unlike the boys. Instead of being a light color, her fur was jet black with a purplish sheen, and long slashes of fur missing on her back and shoulders from being whipped when she'd been kidnapped once. She didn't like to, nor did she talk about it with the boys, they just knew that it was a touchy subject that they'd all rather not explore. Her large metal tail brace was amazingly light weight and it hung at about the middle of her tail. She had gotten it from a metalsmith who's life she'd saved and who accidently found out about her secret when he'd walked in while she changed. Her tail had never been able to fully disguise itself after she found she could become a wolf, and he decided that a beautiful tail should not go without jewelry of some sort. He'd made the tail brace as she'd requested, simple and lightweight, despite that he wanted to make somethign fancy. She explained that she did not want to have a beautiful but flimsy work and break it on accident. The metalsmith left not long after to go home to his family and she hadn't taken the brace off ever since then.
The wolves had walked several miles, completely secluded in the slowdrift, when a shape appeared in-front of them. As they neared it they grew cautious, their tails raising slightly and hackles rising. The mysterious wolf trotted towards them with its tail wagging, and stopped when it saw Saber, its front dropping, leaving its butt in the air.
Saber herself was very confused, as to why this wolf was here, and what it wanted. She whined at it questioningly to which it lept at her and they both fell into the snow. When she managed to get her wind back, Saber found herself looking at a young female girl, supposedly about 13 years old from her appearance.
"You're a wolf right?" she asked excitedly, "You are aren't you?"
"That I am," replied Saber unsteadily as she changed into a human. She was unsure about this young pup's intentions, so she had no idea how to respond to her enthusiasum.
"I am Saber." she managed to get out with relatively no stuttering. The girl then nuzzled Saber's chest and somehow fell asleep. Saber gently picked her up and hoisted her onto her back, the other still wolves, and resumed walking towards whatever invisible goal that lay ahead of them.
As they walked, the snowfall increased and it was hard to see even three feet ahead. Together, the boys dug a good-sized hole in the snow where they all huddled together, Saber and the girl in the middle with the wolves on the outsides, keeping the snow and wind off of them. They ended up staying there for several hours, each of them taking shifts to stay awake. It just so happens that, during her shift, Saber began to sleep-walk. She got up and crawled out of the hole, not waking the other wolves up, but accidently jarring the girl awake, who followed her. Saber made her way back towards where they'd met the girl, and she stopped. The girl now knew that Saber was not controlling her own actions, and attacked her to try and wake her up. They were both sent sprawling into the snow, and Saber jolted awake.
"What's going on? Where am I?" Saber said to no one in particular.
"You were sleepwalking Saber, you left the others and walked here." the girl explained.
"The others!" Saber exclaimed, grabbing the girl's hand and running back towards where they boys were sleeping. When she heard the wolf equal of screaming coming from that direction, she doubled her pace, stumbling and almost twisting her ankle multiple times. She charged in and it was already too late, much too late. Three wolf bodies lay in the snow, motionless, and bathed in streaks of scarlet.
"No, no, no, NO!" Saber screamed in anguish. "This can't be, this can't, no. It's my, it's all my own, my fault." She knelt between their bodies and sobbed hopelessly. Her hands stroked their sodden fur, paying no mind to the blood that clung to her fingers like glue. Gerard whimpered and coughed, blood and saliva coming from his open jaws. Saber immediatley focused on him, resting his head on her lap.
"Gerard," she cried, "don't leave me, please, don't I'm sorry." Gerard licked her hand and sighed heavily, coughing again and again, his body heaving from the effort it took to breath.
"I'll stay with you, always... because I.... I... I... love you." Her eyes widened suddenly, then closed and her hand stroked his soft ears.
"I know." she replied almost inaudibly.
The girl came up behind her, holding something shiny, and silver. Saber looked back and jumped forwards just as a knife came slashing down, burying itself in Gerard's corpse. Saber growled menacingly at the girl who dislodged the knife and came at her again, but this time, pearly white fangs found themselves embedded in her skull, and she fell, breaking her spine and suffering little as she died, Saber made sure of that. And just like that, she was completely, and utterly, alone.
Saber stood on her four paws, turned tail, and ran, not nearly as fast as she had to get there, but fast enough that she lost sight of the carnage within a minute or two. When she was sure she couldn't see them anymore, she turned, and sat, facing them.
"I will find out who killed them." she whispered. "I will find them!" she then vowed to the sea of snow, "I will find them, and make them pay for what they've done. And then, I will fulfill their dream. Leon, and Victor, and dear, dear Gerard. I WILL go to Paradise!!"
