"Have you read the letter?" Melanie asked, raising an eyebrow. He really wasn't going to make her say it out loud, was he? Did he really want her to have an emotional breakdown?

"I don't know!" Melanie blurted out, louder than she probably should've. "Sev, I don't know." She shook her head. "My entire life has been tricks. And games. And lies. How am I supposed to know that this is any different?"

"No! I don't." Melanie stood up angrily. "How am I supposed to? I always had found it hard to believe that you had stayed with me, after everything I had put you through... And this would be a good reason, right? So you can assist your precious Dark Lord!" Melanie was furious. She hated not knowing things.
"I thought it was real. I trusted you. But... I don't know. I don't know anything anymore."

"I don't want to believe it, Severus. But you have to understand. I can never be sure of anything... so many people have betrayed me before. I just don't know." Melanie broke out into tears then, letting out a sob. Really, most of her said that it wasn't true. That Sev was still on her side... but there was that little cautious, paranoid part of her that warned her that she couldn't trust him. Or anyone.

Melanie fell to her knees at his words, crying into her hands. She couldn't form words now. She couldn't stand. She was paralyzed. All she could do was cry... man, she was such a baby. Right now, though, she was probably as good as dead.
