I don't want to open a debate here, but I do want to post a response to something said earlier because I feel like it might help make things a bit more clear...a lot of people have misconceptions surrounding the Bible and God and Jesus, and I believe its important to try and clear up those misconceptions when possible.
"All sins lead to death? Who made that rule? I don't know about you but I don't feel it is right to tell a little child they deserve to die and be tortured for enternity for disobeying their parent once. This is biblical law not something that I'm making up and it is clear the punishment does not fit the crime."
It is not right to tell a little child they deserve to die and be tortured for eternity, you are correct. You are incorrect in believing that Biblical law dictates this will happen as a result of disobeying your parent(s). As a Christian mother, I have never once told my children that. Instead I have explained the importance of not sinning, given them examples of real-life consequences that could happen as a result, and explained the reasoning behind each of the 10 Commandments so they could better understand why God says we shouldn't do something.
Nowhere in the Bible does it tell us to raise kids in fear. Children did not fear Jesus in the Bible - He made sure of that. Some humans have gotten it into their heads that children and adults alike should be fear-mongered into being believers, but that is wrong, and is a human fallacy. Same goes for being held to an impossible standard of perfection - that's all man, not God. A lot of organized religions take this approach, and it can be scarring and it can give the wrong impression.
I grew up in a church in which the preacher was all about the yelling; fire and brimstone and all that. My dad was a new Christian at the time, and there was a lot of fear used at home to "teach" me the right way. So I understand when someone has a negative view of the Bible and Christianity in general - I've been there too. I was blessed enough to finally be shown the difference between what man does and what God says though, and I got through my own fear and reluctance to believe.
One more point to mention on this note: When considering what the Bible tells us, its important to remember that this is a Book that holds a record of history. The Old Testament contains different ways to atone for sins, and forbids certain things such as eating shellfish and certain animals. Those don't apply any longer! The New Testament comes after the birth of Jesus, and because He died for our sins, we are not held to those old conditions any longer.
Great fan club. =)
