Making tu isn't as hard as it may seem.
Plus, there are several ways to make tu.
All it takes is a little patience :D
1) Quests are one of the easiest ways to make tu, especially the Squishy Quest and Toy Quest. They require a little preparation though! You should stock up on items from the shops. This makes it really easy to hand in quest items.
2) Play Luck games including Donation Center, and Precious Pearl Quandary. They may not give a ton of tu, but playing them daily will give you a great start. You can play the Donation Center every 30 minutes.
3) Skill games including Stocks. Stocks are pretty much obsolete so I wouldn't bother too much with it.

4) Sell pets in your rancher shop.

5) Sell hatches that you don't want to use (they go for 100,000-200,000 tu each, generally).
How to sell hatches: Advertise! If you have access to the Shoutbox, you can usually sell hatches there pretty quick. Just remember to only advertise once per 30minutes ;). If you don't have access to the SB you can use the Sales&Trades board to advertise. If someone wants your hatches, they will send you tu and however many eggs (3 eggs for 3 hatches etc.). You will then hatch the eggs they send you, and tell them what you hatched for them. They will tell you what they want to name it, if they want to keep it. If they don't want to keep it, they might tell you to either release it, or they may even let you keep it (just remember, if they tell you to release it, you must release it!). If they give you a name, you name the pet and then send it to them.
6) Sell unwanted eggs in the Egg Market.
7) Sell art, coding, or writing if you are good at it. Use the Forum boards to set a shop up.
8) Go to the User Contests forum and join different contests.
9) Use the Sales & Trades forum to advertise what you are selling.
10) Name Searching! Many times a user will want to find a certain name, but won't want to take the time to do it, so they hire other user's to do it for them. Most name searchers charge about 500k-800k per name that they find, so if you are good at it, it's a good way to make tu.
How to search names:
Go to Information up at the top and choose Creatu Search.
Once there, you need to decide how you are going to search. I will tell you how I do it, but there are different ways, so you may find something else works for you.
Location: Any
Species: I go in alphabetical order, just so I can keep track of what I have already searched, so I would start with Aerix
Color: Any
Mutant: No
Gender: Any (if the search comes up as being too broad, I would go back and search by male and female)
Set Order By: Pet Name
Now all you have to do is go through each species until you find the name requested! Warning: This could take awhile, but the more you do it, the more efficient you should become!

11) You can sometimes earn a 5mill or 10 mill barter token from the third tier of the Daily Rewards. You need to play a lot of quests and buy/sell from NPC and player shops to reach this tier!
12) Your pets can sometimes find barter token through Exploring
Extra tips brought to you by Pretzel:
Swim in the Enchanted Springs (located on Atquati) daily. Higher tiers give better prizes. You can also sell your tier 3 spring dips, generally for around 500k. (thanks to hollyheart12 for expanding on this).
To save money on food, pick an apple from the Apple Tree (luck game) each day with each of your pets.
Have a tab open for each NPC food shop, so you can buy cheap food (around 500tu each is good) quickly.
