was doing pretty good exploring, finding eggs, setting them up to incubate then went to hatch them. Am I missing something in regards to naming pets? I try to name them and nothing happens.  I thought rancher got three hatches a day was only able to hatch 2 eggs that I can't name at this time =(

added some extra letters and the box went green and accepted the name

Hello and welcome to Rescreatu :D 

although im sure you have already figured it out, I just thought ill say:

On Rescreatu all pets names are unique. That means, for example, that if some one had named their petty JellyTastic that no one else can name a pet JellyTastic, if a name has been used the naming box will stay red and you will be unable to finish hatching :)

Hi, Starlynn!

Welcome to Rescreatu! We're glad to have you. :)

On your hatchery, it will say how many hatches you've used up, right above the egg and filter drop-down menus. For example, mine says: At this time you may only hatch up to 1 creatu each day. This means you have 1 hatches left.

If you still have one hatch left according to this, you should be able to hatch another pet. If there are 0 hatches left and you don't have 3 pets, you could possible have hatched one, not named it, and forgotten. If this is the case, there should be an alert at the top of the hatchery page under the blue navigation bar telling you that you have 1 Creatu awaiting a name.
