A Roleplay is best described as collaborative writing with other players. Instead of just you writing a story, you write a story with other people. You each make a character (or more if you want to play more) come up with some sort of plot or setting (ex. a group of people must travel through a fantasy world to stop an evil wizard from destroying it) and then write what your characters do or say to each other.
Roleplaying usually makes use of something called a Bio or Character Skeleton. Basically you outline your character for the other players to read. Usually it is set up to at least contain Name, Age, Gender, Appearance, Personality, Background, as well as additional things depending on how in-depth you want to get right off the start of if there's anything special needed for the roleplay, such as Weapons or Abilities.
Some people also choose to skip the Bio and just jump into Roleplaying, explaining things like appearance and everything through Roleplaying in their introduction (which is their first post with the character).
Roleplaying is a little different than ordinary writing in it has a few basic rules.
The first is you cannot control anyone else's characters but your own. They control their characters, you control your characters. When you try to control another person's character, it's called power-playing and that's always a big no-no.
The second rule is you can't god-mod. God-modding is when you make your character really super strong and can't be beat under any circumstances. (ex. Your character is completely unable to move and someone tries to attack them and they still miss.)
It's also highly frowned upon to make "perfect" characters, which are called Mary-Sues. Perfect characters are usually described as super beautiful, super smart, having a bunch of love interests, super athletic, etc. Basically unrealistic.
Also it's considered good etiquette to separate out of character (OOC) writing and in character (IC) writing. Typically OOC will be in brackets, usually double brackets such as (()). For example a basic post would look like...
((Hi, how are you guys today?)) <== OOC, not part of the Roleplay. Mark left his house and went to school. <== IC, part of the Roleplay.
People often chat or discuss the Roleplay in OOC. Some choose to have separate topics for OOC and IC, where you only post for the Roleplay in IC, and if you have something out of character to say, you say it in the OOC topic.
Uh... that's all the information I can think to throw at you at the moment. xD
If you want to see a Roleplay I'd recommend you look at Curse of the Dryad Queen. tle="" href="http://www.rescreatu.com/forum/cat/games/rp/the-curse-of-the-dryad-queen/~page/1/">http://www.rescreatu.com/forum/cat/games/rp/the-curse-of-the-dryad-queen/~page/1/
It's a good example of a currently-ongoing Roleplay.
But another thing about Roleplay etiquette. It's considered very rude to post on a Roleplay you're not a part of or intend on joining, especially once it's started like that one has. It's considered less rude if it hasn't started yet, but it still can be considered spam. So you can read, but not write. And if there's a Roleplay you'd like to join, but it has started and you're not sure its still open for characters, it's better to PM the owner and ask than post on the thread.
I think that covers most everything, I hope. Let me know if you have any more questions. ^^
