Well, I had to give my kitty away and I am open for a new pet. I was browsing through Petfinder.com to try and find a lab mix dog that needed training, so Bubby could have a friend and I could save an older dog, and give it the training it needs to live in a home. Well, I didnt notice I typed in "black lab mix", but a lot popped up. I saw a few that I liked, but I read through all of them. On alost EVERY profile, it said," Hopefully he/she doesn't get over-looked like most black dogs". Im like, what? Okay, so I dont want another black dog. I am really looking for a white or white and tan dog so it will be REALLY easy to tell Bubby apart from it. Well, I may have changed my mind. I researched it and it said that most black dogs get put down. I dont know why, I think it is stupid. But, I think everyone should give black dogs a break. It sounds racist, but it is the fact that most black dogs are solid black, and to tell the truth, they are a little scary. Well, only because most have dark brown eyes. I think the next dog I get will be a black dog rescue. I just wanted to let everyone know, that this problem is plain STUPID!

Albino rabbits are also frequently put down because people don't like the color of their eyes.

I used to have a pair of albino rabbits, and I thought they were cute with their red eyes. Stil can't understand why they're being put down because of them.

I have a new puppy now; a German Spitz and Rottweiler cross. Her name's Kiara, and she's mostly black with a bit of white, with black eyes. I can't find any problem with her being black.

I read that one reason is that black dogs look "menacing".It also doesn't help that the black dog is considered an omen of death. It's quite sad.I love black dogs.

Please disregard my terrible avatar. It won't let me edit it...but apparently that's being worked on -_-

I think they all said that because statisticly, black dogs get put in pounds the most. Therefore, they are, statisticly, the ones most put down.

i plan on adopting a black dog sometime this year, mainly because of this. I think its also because the "odd" ones get picked first, and since most of the shelter dogs are black, they get the last pick.

albinos look rare, that's why i personally love the white, red-eyed guniea pigs and rabbits (although, not including on res - i'm no greedy rancher). And although the albino variant is quite "common" in these animals and ferrets, it doesn't stop making them look all designer and fancy. Putting down animals with a variant, no matter how frequently seen in a certain species, so rare, is like setting monies on fire. Please don't take that wrongly.

and, i'll admit, black dogs can look pretty menacing - but it doesn't get to me. I would be as intimidated by a black dog as i would be by a white, it's ridiculous that people often *censored*osciate blacks with an omen of doom. In celtic myths, a race of hound-,wolf-like dogs were *censored*osciated with the underworld and evil - but not all are black. They could come in a range of colours and markings, but are all equally dark-hearted, and neither should seem more frightening than the other. In this legend, black dogs weren't so individual - they were just amongst the crowd.

and the only way my puppy moss, a black lab, could predict certain doom is if you leave her in the kitchen with a few priceless objects on the surfaces. Other than that (and her rather vicious barking, which can give someone the impression of a bloodhound rather than a seven-month-old lab puppy), the only way she could injure you is by clambering over your fallen body in an attempt to smother your face with her tongue. She's so gentle, even the cat has learned how to play with her and not risk getting squished. And such a squiggly little wiggle, i think being black makes her look ten times cuter. <3

I agree completely, wolf. I have a tendancy to lean twards black or white animals myself, and I love them all. Now adays, I seem to come accross alot of superstisios people, though, and it's really quite unfair. Not to mention judemental.

I think people have a tendancy to lean twards animals that they think relect them. This can be helpful, because then energy levals and temperments tend to be equal. (That's why I've fallen in love with ACD's, but that's just me.) But, this can allso be a bad thing, because people don't want thier 'animal reflection' to be evil or demonic. That's why alot of colors or markings are disregarded as demonic or angelic things.

Predgudice is a horrable thing. Unfortunately, it's verry common and can be found nearly every where you look. It's a harsh reality.

Yeah, it's horrible. Black dogs have been considered omens of death and bad luck in many cultures. Some legends even state the Devil most commonly taking the form of a black dog.

Most shelters and adoption places won't adopt out black cats right before certain events because a number of religions still use black cats in sacrificial ceremonies.

It's just plain stupid. I've met plenty of black dogs AND cats who were perfectly friendly. I really do hope you end up getting a rescued dog. Good luck in whatever you choose, and thank you for seeing these animals for what they are- misunderstood angels.

Mug- I have a completely black cat with green eyes. Her and her brother where dumped in a box on the side of the road as new borns. We saved them ,but the male didn't make it. Zilla, the black one, just turned three years old. She is the perfect angel. She's incredably smart, too. Somehow, she manegess to get food from the ferret cage and open the refrigorator door. Other than that, I couldn't wish for a better cat. After I lost her brother, though, I only take rescue animals. My newest dog was abused as a little puppy. She's still a little skidish, but she's getting better.

I had a black lab as a child. I remember playing in the yard while she laid there chewing her favorite stick. She was a perfect angel of a dog, and only recently had to be put down. She was 13 years old and pretty sick when we put her down.
