It's a well known fact that I love sharing movies and would pretty much like to indoctrinate everyone into watching arthouse. I am an avid movie goer and I would love to share the films that I would like you to watch as well as get suggestions from you for what I should watch.

These movies I put in this list are really movies that sort of change one's perspective on things, sort of humbled me a tad more. So yeah. The list of opinion changing films!

-Departures (Japan) (my favourite film of all time)
-Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence (Japan/UK)
-Mary and Max (Australia) (you know a movie's good when the first line is 'Mary Dinkle's eyes were the colour of mud puddles, her birth mark, the colour of poo')
-Tokyo Godfathers (Japan) (This one is really funny)
-Princess Mononoke (Japan)
-Taipei Exchange (Taiwan)
-Poetry (2010, Korean film. Just in case you can't find it)

Oh yeah, I just noticed but all of these films (apart from Mary and Max) are Asian. Mainly Japanese. To those people who dislike weeaboos, I swear, these are not like 'anime' or anything. They are all live action (apart from Princess Mononoke, but it's Ghibli). Plus, you should expect loads of Asian films because I'm Chinese xD

I'm going to make more lists under different themes. Go ahead and post your own lists! I would love to know what you guys like ;D

Lists that are soon to come:
Wars and revolutions
So bad it's good
FIGHTING AND ACTION!!!!!1111
Pscho-Thriller > Horror
Eye Candy
Great Music

Oh yeah, could I get some opinions? Is The Tree of Life good? I've been told by a friend that it's kinda confusing and boring but it got a Palme d'or and stuff and I know the director. Can someone who's watched it give me a second opinion? I'm not sure if I should get it.

I agree with the several people who've already suggested The Princess Bride. You could show that movie to anyone of any age and they would probably like it. It's just one of those movies.

I actually didn't like the movie version of Eragon, I found it veering from the plot and the actor choice wasn't spectacular. However, I totally agree with 3mmique. Howl's Moving Castle is fantastic, I loved it when I was 9 and I still love it.

I'm currenty obsessed with Harry Potter (Severus Snape <33) so I've been watching the movies over and over again. A movie that I absolutely LOVED is Titanic. It's amazing the amount of history they weaved into it and the actors are stunning.

This other movie, I think it's called Inception but I may be wrong is pretty good too.

Ghibli is my waifu. EVERYONE SHOULD GO AND WATCH THE BORROWER ARIETTY RIGHT NOW. And watch the original Borrowers while you're at it because I always feel we should pay our respects to the original

which reminds me, everyone go read Howl's Moving Castle because I am very disappointed not enough people loves book-Howl more than movie-Howl. While I congratulate Ghibli on a lovely and beautiful film, I felt it took away the very essence of the book. While I am completely alright with a book and a film being two separate and different entities I just wished that it followed the same direction of the book at the very least, it was at complete opposites with even the castle! (And I angst every day that Sophie was not a red head) I love the film, I saw it first but really I have to say it'll never be on pars with the book! /ends HMC rant.

Also has anyone watch 'The King's Speech'? I enjoyed that immensely.

Also has anyone seen the French version of 'A Monster in Paris'? Is it good because I'm antsy just waiting for it!

I didn't know this thread was so popular. I'll post more themed lists now ;D

Pscho-Thriller > Horror
I hate horror films. They never make sense. They are all stupid. Psycho-thrillers are better.
-Oldboy (S Korea) (for 18+)
-Pan's Labyrinth (Spain) (not really psycho-thriller, but close enough. I also think it may be 18+)
-Black Swan (USA)  (not very good, but it's a good one to start if you're not into artsy fart. 18+)

Eye Candy
Not just pretty, but meaningful.
- Paprika (Japan)
- Summer Wars (Japan)
- The Good, The Bad, The Weird (S Korea) (great fight scenes)
- Waltz with Bashir (Israel) (for 18+)
- Mirrormask (USA (I think)) (I was going to suggest it before Yoshi did)
- Ghibli (Japan) (like, everything they make. I've watched all of them. I have all of them on DVD too)

Pure Entertainment
- Singing in the Rain (USA)
- Adventure time (USA) (not a film, but everyone should watch it)
- Batman (USA) (1966)

Artsy Fart
Even though almost all of the films I have listed are art house. I'll put another list for the really artsy fartsy ones:
- Akira Kurosawa's Dreams (Japan) (the slowest paced film I've ever watched. It rnmay not appeal to American audiences because American films tend to be rnvery fast paced (so fast paced that I tend to not like American films)).
-Generally all Akira Kurosawa's work. Again, they may not appeal to people who are used to watching American films
- The Triplets of Belleville (France) (This is pretty darn trippy. May not appeal to everyone)
- Mirrormask (USA (I think)) is artsy fartsy
- I have a few more artsy farsty lined up for me to watch. But I haven't the time. I'll add to this list.

Wars and revolutions
I LOVE WAR FILMS
- Persepolis (France) (my second favourite film)
- Schindler's List (USA)
- 71 into the Fire (S Korea)
- Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence (Japan/UK)
DO NOT WATCH:
- THE HURT LOCKER
IT WAS A WASTE OF MY TIME. IT'S BAD, NOTHING HAPPENED. I DON'T KNOW WHY IT GOT BEST FILM. DON'T LISTEN TO THE AMERICAN ACADEMY.
- And Benjamin Button
I don't know why it got in the critereon collection. It genuinely rested on the laurels of F Scott Fitzgerald. They didn't dig into the subject as deep as they should have. The pacing was bad, it was too fast. It's just a normal hollywood film.

Oh yeah, this film doesn't fit anywhere. So I'll just put it here:
Sawako Decides (Japan) (for 16+)

I'll make more lists as I watch more films
