Doctors pimp and push drugs too much as it is as a solution for everything. I wouldn't want to give them the chance to push a pill at a kid who didn't need it just to get a cut of the drug sales. Mental disabilities tend to show up after being triggered anyway, so a generalized screening really wouldn't do much good at all.

More people need to be aware that a mental illness is not something you bring upon yourself, and the shame and embara.ssment that comes attached to it needs to be done away with. There plenty of physical illnesses that are self-caused, yet no one blames the person for those.

It would have saved me years of frustration and misunderstanding if I had been diagnosed with ADD when I was ten instead of nineteen. The meds they put me on immediately made a significant difference. For the first time in my life I was able to sit through a lecture and digest it. Everyone suddenly realized that the reason I was a 'D' student all of my life was because I had ADD, not because I didn't care about my grades. I can't even begin to explore how much I've missed out on in life simply because I was diagnosed too late.
