Anyway. It isn't so much something you can "show". It's a language. 

About teaching, well, I think it's better to dabble in it yourself first. Trust me, it's much less challenging if you know more about it first before asking someone to "show" you how to do it. Help with little things can come later, but you need to understand what it is and how it works first.

When actually making the layout, any editing program can be used. Photoshop. Gimp. So on and so forth. Layouts are usually made out of pieces which you put together when you do the coding and stuff.
