He marched them up to the top of the hill
And marched them down again
And when they were up they were up
And when they were down they were down
And now the fool led them up the hill
Could never bring them back again.
Genrikh Samsonov is a sorrowful man who is unable to come to terms with what he believes are the dark deeds of his past. After losing a battle extremely badly, losing the lives of a hundred thousand including his own son, Samsonov finds that he is no longer fit to be part of society. That he is a monster.
And so he leaves his wife and youngest son behind, not wanting to taint them with the blood of his crimes. He keeps wandering, not entirely sure where he is going. But it's not back.
